Next best thing to hatching...my first broody hen!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited. I have some eggs that should come tomorrow..We are building a close in for her in the coop..she growls at me, never did that before. She's been trying for the past week, and now finally won't get off the nest, and there aren't any eggs! There will be soon.

Yeah, the black one. Judging by the pics of eggs, I'm thinking she's a black marans, which I didn't know existed until I started looking at Bev Davis' website. Most just talk about BCMs. My EE girls do lay pretty much every day too though. My speckled sussex are the worst layers, but then they're around 3 years old and two of them are just finishing up a molt. So I get one egg about 3-4 times a week from the nonmolter.


My two new little ee chicks are in their brooder together, getting along fabulously. They look almost exactly alike; the one who hatched last night is a tiny bit darker. And, OMG, they are loud if separated!

Sometimes genetic/health issues in the chick itself cause death. So, unless you personally manufactured the dna mix, etc., I think you have to hold yourself blameless.
