Need hatch buddies for or close to the 18th!

Sometimes perfectly healthy chicks will even die. I have had "sticky" chicks do just fine. I think you might of had humidity problems, but not positive. I do think you should remove as much of the substance as you can without causing too much stress or draft. I normally just use a warm damp paper towel, and just lightly wipe out what will come off without any force. The chick still has a chance if it sucked everything up.

Thanks Jeslew. I gave it a bath of sorts and otherwise it's completely healthy. We'll see if that helps. I didn't know it was possible to have an ugly chick but I gotta tell ya... this thing has a face only a mother could love.

Oh boy, another long night for someone.

Yep, it sure looks like it. It is already 1:09 AM and I am about ready to drop!

I may just have to put the cat in her crate and go on to bed. I guess hubby and I will have to go out tomorrow and get the small coop ready and my brooder box. Just hope if this one is going to be an ONLY "CHILD" that he/SHE makes it. And I pray that its a girl.

If I had known that one of our pullets was going to go broody, I would have put the eggs under her and let her hatch them, but I didn't know. She is still broody (this is going into the 5th day I think. She keeps wanting to sit on the other two chickens eggs but none are fertile.

Oh it can't be that bad. Maybe so ugly it's cute.

I'll post a pic tmw. It's pretty bad. Homely looking thing. I could probably agree with "so ugly it's ALMOST cute."

Mine were due on the 18th. I haven't heard/seen anything at all. My 11 are under a broody and she isn't even in lock down mode. Maybe they are just developing slow and she can tell? She hatched out 12 chicks just 3 weeks ago with another broody, so I know she's a successful broody. She was even more determined than the other girl - that's why I am so shocked I have nothing yet. Nine eggs are shipped eggs and two are from my own girls.

-sigh- Maybe tomorrow.

How long do I wait to turn off the incubator?

Out of 13 eggs, 9 hatched successfully by yesterday evening. There were 4 that felt too heavy to hatch the previous evening, so I figured I was done at 9 and started cleaning out the incubator. Whoops! One of those duds had a pip!

I candled the other 3 before putting them back in the incubator and didn't see any internal pips, but they feel lighter than the did on Friday night. Today is day 24 & the incubator is starting to stink (like blood, not rotten egg) and the water dish has a nasty scum on it from the other chicks. I'm thinking it's unsanitary and am dying to clean it and put it away after chick #10 is finished drying off, but should I give the others more time?

I should also add that 2 of the 3 that haven't pipped have really weird looking air sacs that cover half of the egg (the long way). I've. Even suspicious that they wouldn't hatch, but they kept developing right along with the rest.

We had another power outage this morning
sad.png
about 4:30 AM or so, I had just gone to bed and was drifting off when I heard our dog barking and then I saw the lights of the truck. Well the lights were out for a good 2 - 3 hours. I came back down stairs just after they went out and put a large towel over the bator and then went back to bed. This morning at around 7:00 or 7:30 AM the chick that pipped last night had hatched. It is still in the bator drying. No more have pipped, so I am thinking this one will be an only 'Child'.

How do you take care of an only??? How do you keep them warm?

I am going to use my son's aquarium since there is a lid to it where I can either place the heat lamp right on top or suspend it. I got to clean the aquarium and pray that at least one more chick hatches.
