Yay you have babies! I would suggest for the dog problem, get a better latch. The gravity one with a carabiner do work well. And so that wind does not blow ours open, we have a spring attached to the door and the run support for our yard door and a spring attached to the door and coop wall for our coop door. That way if your door ever blows open it will shut right away because the spring pulls it shut. Also, maybe tie your dogs if you do not want them to associate with the birds. I hope you really very firmly scolded them, because that will decrease the chance of them doing it again. Just out of curiousity, what kind do you have? I am amssuming something bigger.

This was not the first time they gotten a chicken and we had scolded them. They would tuck tail as soon as we came when they had gotten one before. But when it happened before, the chicken would fly over the fence into the yard. This time they intentionally killed all the birds (20 in all). They were a chow/lab mix; we believe. The three survivors had hidden in my chick area I had just prepared for momma and her babies.

It was really my fault, though; because I did not secure the latch on that gate. It won’t just open.
