Need help/advice for goose not eating and wobbly

Good morning day 16:

She ate off and on of her pellets yesterday but only about a half cup of lettuce. Instead of just standing in her house looking out at the rest of the crew day after day, she was walking around quite a bit trying to forage in the straw. The texture of her poops are better and still no longer runny but very very soft. Imagine if you ran a bunch of salad greens through a juicer and took the separated pulp and spread it out about a 16th of an inch thick - just like that - moist, firm, but flat. It's the color of grass green. Probably from eating the lettuce

? Yes, Miss Lydia, it is funny how we get so excited about their poops, lol

.

Because she was eating on her own I opted out of tube feeding her yesterday (with exception of the wormer and the 10ml of formula that morning). Every time I thought that maybe I should I looked out at her and saw her nibbling at the pellets. I didn't want to disrupt that if she was showing such an interest.

I did not start the antibiotics. Instead I put a couple drops oil of oregano into her gallon of drinking water. She seems to actually like it. The reason why is that because she had not eaten in so long I'm concerned about the state of her liver and worry that starting antibiotics may cause damage (or further damage If there was any). I didn't want to risk it and decided on a more holistic approach.

Today I got smart. Before I let her out of confinement and into the house, I weighed out a new bucket of feed and will see how much she actually eats today. I did tube her another 15ml (again she got too wiggly to give more safely) along with the last dose of the wormer this morning. I gave her the left over formula in a dish with a few meal worms and a few pieces of chopped kale on top to make it interesting (also weighed). When I let her out she went right to the bucket of pellets and began eating.

Her behavior so far is the same as yesterday - Lively, trying to forage, bright eyed, preening.

She will still be separated from the rest of the flock for several more days at least so I can make sure she's improving and well enough to play in the yard again.

What a great update.. I think your right to wait before letting her back with the flock, but so happy to hear she is improving and getting back her appetite.

Day 16 evening:

She didn't eat as much as I thought she was. Her head was in the feed bucket off and on a lot today (at least once or more per hour). She ate 17 grams of her leftover formula from this mornings mix and only 15 grams of her pellets. It could have been more as she was foraging all day through the straw that had wheat stalks and bits of green dried weeds that she may have eaten. But of the food I could weigh it was only a total of 32 grams.

But she was showing interest in food ALL day long which is a definite improvement. I was hoping for better.

Her poops were mixed. Most were like I had reported yesterday but one was actually normal colored (khaki like the color of the pellets). I haven't seen any slimy bright green in a couple of days.

Other than ignoring her bath water today it has still been a good day. She is looking brighter and is much more active.

I didn't get a weight on her today but will weigh her in the morning before I feed. I really wished she had eaten more today but her "interest" in eating and foraging gives me more hope than I had a week ago. Think I'll give her moistened feed and dry feed separately tomorrow and see if she may prefer one or the other. I bought some more kale (which I know will turn her poop green again) that I'll give her as well. If she doesn't eat much again tomorrow I think I may have to tube her at bedtime.

Improvements are awesome, I think your expert enough now to know when to step in with feeding and when not too, I am just so happy she is taking an interest in life again.

Hope your feeling better too.

Much much better day (day 17):

She ate 180 grams of wet feed (consistency of runny-ish oatmeal) so some of that is water weight, Only 3 grams of dry pellets, 28 grams of mixed grains scratch. So a total of 211 grams of food today. Plus almost 2 cups (un-weighed) of salad consisting of kale, iceberg lettuce, hand picked dandelion and clover leaves. She was so excited to get the greens she almost ran me over to get to the dish. Quite a big difference from yesterday

.

Poops were green of course due to the salad but looked even better in texture from yesterday. They look almost normal now. I'll be giving her 2 more days of separation then let her back out with the rest of the flock on Friday.

With your help/advice/suggestions/tube feeding instructions it looks like we made it. I couldn't have done it without you girls. Thank you...Thank you... Thank you.

Just such great news!! I'd love to see a pic of her. I think you've done it gotten Diamond back to health you and Kathy. The rest of us have been the cheering section

Wish I could get a pic. I don't have a cell phone (no cell service here so no point). I became a first time grandma in August and gave my camera/video recorder to my son (it was brand new and he didn't have one). My son is in another state so I can't borrow it. We intend to replace it but haven't found the time. Some of this would have been easier to explain with pictures but we got through it.

Congrats on becoming a grandma. Now you really do need a camera so we can see your feathered youngins.

How is she today?

-Kathy
Looks like this will be my final report - she is doing GREAT !! These past couple of days she has eaten well, looked well, poops look good (nothing abnormal - yea). Hasn't had a tipsy moment since last week. I'm so happy, happy, happy

. She has been pacing the door to be let out for the past couple of days. I was going to let her out tomorrow (Friday). But I just returned from a last minute doctor visit and she was running around honking saying "let me out, let me play". She already had a good amount to eat already today and it's only 3-1/2 hours to sunset so I decided to go ahead and give her a few hours out of confinement. The rest of the flock came around to welcome her back. My drake; however, was trying to get "friendly" so I had to chase him down and put him in confinement instead so that Diamond can forage in peace. Blackfoot is happy to have her back and hasn't left Diamonds side and they are out foraging side by side together.

Without you all by my side, cheering me on, teaching me EMS tube feeding, I would have been lost and surely would have lost her.

You are all the best ! Thank you.
