That's a tough call. I tend to think broodies sense what is going on, so if they are staying put, then I'd think something will still happen. Are these experienced mommas?
I'm sorry, I really think you will have to trust your gut on which way to go.
The ducks are first time moms and have killed or mysteriously lost half their eggs between the two of them. I took one that they cracked, one died from them cracking it, and I left one that has a small crack. Another exploded under one of them, and I have thrown away 3 due to dying in the shell for unknown reasons. Another (third) duck was sitting, but abandoned her nest of 18 eggs after 2 weeks (ish). I saved what I could and put them under the two we have now. Until writing this, I totally forgot about that -- and that would explain the ones that are at different levels of incubation. And the chicken has sat before, but I took the eggs to the incubator after trying to move her nest to the ground where she and the babies would be safe from the rest of the flock, because she got really irritated and abandoned the nest. There was a temperture spike in the incubator when I fell asleep while they were hatching, and we lost some to that -- but the rest hatched out fine. So she did a great job right up to the end.
