hey guys and gals! I need help! I just got 2 silkie chicks that are about 1 month old. One chicks backside has blood on it! He/she isn't looking to good either. It closes its eyes most of the time and puts its head closely to its body. I'm very concerned since I'm just babysitting them and my baby cousin is in love with them!! So I am really trying to get this chick better.

THANKs so much and I really hope you guys can figure this out :fl:hmm:(:hit

Are you chicken sitting these birds? If so, then contact their owner and let them know you are having some problems.

It looks like a prolapse. Can you give her a wash up in warm soapy water, rinse well, then repost some photos of the vent. Also a photo of both of these chicks would be good.

Is she able to poop?
I can only assume that the prolapse is due to constipation if she is only 1 month old.
After you wash up the vent really well, apply an anti-inflammatory cream or hemorrhoid cream to the exposed tissue. This will help to keep it from drying out.

Without seeing more, I would be hesitant to recommend pushing it back in at this time. Do what you can to get her hydrated, don't worry about food at this time, she needs fluids. You can give her electrolytes, poultry vitamins or plain cool water-whatever you have.

Keep her inside so flies don't get on the tissue. Once you get her cleaned up and the ointment on the tissue, dry her well so she doesn't get chilled (use a hair dryer if you need too), then let her rest quietly in a semi-dark room where it's fairly warm (75-80F).

Let us know how she is.

Hank right so much for getting back so quickly!! I let the owner know as much as I do. I gave her a wash. Do you still want a picture of both chicks? I have had her for one day and she hasn't pooped since. Would you recommend anti inflammatory cream or hemorrhoid cream? I think the blood is a part of her inside! It is coming out of the vent and is very hard!?!? Would you want me to still have a heat lamp on her or just a warm room?
Thanks so much
Kaylie

Can you take her to a vet?

She can be in just a warm room as long a you dry her very well after the baths.

The red you are seeing is a prolapsed vent, so you are correct, that is her insides. If she is not pooping, then she is backed up.

I can't take her to the vet if needed. Would you recommend me taking her to the vet? I was looking at other prolapse vents and noticed my chicks looks different. Mine has a big red blop. Like it's WAY bigger then the rest of the pictures. My chick seems to just lay in a corner but with her head shoved in the corner. Is she okay? And whenever she tries to poop she squats and puts her wings up. I'm so worried about her!!:hmm:hit

Yes, in your situation I would highly recommend seeking vet care. You are taking care of someone else's birds and one has a medical emergency.

From your description, no, she is not o.k. It sounds like she is having a very hard time eliminating waste and the prolapse has hardened. Is she successful at pooping or nothing comes out?
Will she drink/take water at all?
What have you tried doing for her? If you can't get her to the vet asap, then the vent needs to be unclogged so she can poop, the straining she is just pushing more tissue out.
This is treatment for a hen, but it's the same concept http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/prolapse-vent-causes-treatment-graphic/

She's actually is eliminating waste. But it just gets stuck right on the red thing. She's drinking water as I have seen. I have been giving her butt baths with dawn soap and gently pushing in the vent. After I put some hemorrhoid cream on the vent area. But the vent keeps popping back out. Also the only day open for vets are Wednesday.
Is this the worst chick you have seen?
Is this chick in very bad condition and in pain?
And are all chickens who have this problem hens/pullets?
Thanks so so much
Much love from me and my chick
Kaylie
