Hi - Had a predation event. My Orpington is badly injured and I'm new to raising chickens. Can't seem to find a local vet who can see her today.

Please see photo. The area shown is directly under her wing; i.e. had to lift her wing to get photo. Injured area is more to her side/back than breast/belly. She is fatigued but standing. Poor thing!

Sorry for the grotesqueness of this. I fear she is mortally wounded and don't want her to suffer so your help is greatly appreciated!

I'm not very experienced in this, and others may have other opinions, but it looks to me like her organs are exposed. I think in this situation the best option would be to cull. I'm sorry she was attacked :hugs

Poor baby! Clip the feathers away from the wound so they aren't sticking in there. Clean the wound, with a Saline Solution, Clorhexidine, Vetrycin, or warm water in a spray bottle. Once it is rinsed out, spray with Vetrycin, and apply antibiotic ointment to the wound. The other thing would be the feathers under the wing annoying the wound, and making it dirty. I wonder if it would be possible, to use vet wrap to attach a chunk of guase to the under side of the wing, so it covered the whole wound, so the wing wouldn't be getting in the wound. Hope this helps! Avery

Can you post some more photos when you have time so we can gauge how large the wound is?
Any idea what got a hold of her?
Any wounds on the other side?

I would flush the wound well with saline (you can make your own if needed), betadine, Chlorhexidine or warm soapy water. Trim the feathers away from the wound and apply triple antibiotic ointment.
I would not wrap or cover the wound unless she starts picking at it.

The fatigue is concerning and she may be in shock. Place her where it's fairly warm and provide her with fluids. Electrolytes or poultry vitamins if you have them. If not, then a little sugar water for a few hours, then just plain cool water.
Once she's more alert, then you can introduce feed, but hydration is most important.

Chickens are pretty resilient and can heal from lot of things. The first 48 hrs are usually the most critical - getting the wound cleaned and helping them through shock.
Keep us posted.
