I had to take the last 3 eggs from our broodys. Both had managed to crush every single chick that hatched. The last 3 eggs were cold when I found them so I rushed inside, candled them(all moving, two chirping) then placed them in my incubator. Not long after, one pipped and upon inspection, I realized all of the eggs had extra tiny white mites all over them. I'm assuming they had just hatched since I didn't see any when I took them. I took all eggs and gently wiped them down with a warm wet rag, keeping the pipped one, covered as to not dry out the membrane.

Unfortunately, the mites are now in the incubator and there are still some on the eggs(see pic...tiny specks are the mites). All 3 eggs have now pipped and I'm really worried they mites will get inside to the chicks. I've set up a small brooder, that I coated with permethrin powder.

I'm assuming I can't dust the pipped eggs? Can I safely remove any newly hatched chicks immediately after they hatch, even if still wet, lightly powder them and place them in the small brooder then powder again once dry? Do I risk letting them hatch, dry in the incubator and then powder them before placing in the brooder? I'd really love to save these chicks.

Just wait until you have them all hatched an in the brooder, then sanitize your incubator
Thank you so much! I'll hold off until they've all hatched then. They're all making progress so that's a good sign...I hope. I'll definitely be sanitizing the incubator afterwards. The broodys have also been powdered and the coop will be deep cleaned and sprayed tomorrow morning. Mites are such nasty little things! Thanks again 😀
