NEED HELP chickens crop will not empty, beginning of sour crop

Here's an older post by the renowned @Wyorp Rock answering all your questions, including how to give liquid meds safely.

Dosage for Fenbendazole (Safeguard) is 0.23 ml per pound of weight given orally for 5 days in a row. It does not matter if it's the liquid or paste the dosage is still the same.

Let's look at your example - a 3 pound chicken would get 0.69 ml per day for 5 days. Some people do round up to 0.25ml per pound of weight to make measuring easier, so if that is you, then a 3 pound chicken would get 0.75ml per day for 5 days. Make sense?

Are all your birds different sizes pretty much? If you know each bird/can tell them apart, pre-load your syringes for them. Go out early before they get off the roost. Grab each bird, dose them, then let them go. Much easier than running around trying to catch them. Plus, imho, giving a dewormer when the crop is empty in the morning is best to begin with.

Here's how to administer medication orally.

Thank you very helpful. Also to the gal that started this, hope your chicken will be well!

@guest226 How is your girl doing?
Shes doing better, but she lost a lot of weight. Her energy is still regular and she eats and drinks the same!

Her crop got much less full but is still slow...and her poops became more POOP and less water.

Her comb got a bit pale and I noticed she lost a ton of weight. The crop bra arrived, so I'm waiting for a good time to put it on. She yelps in pain when i touch her pinfeathers so its difficult.

Poor baby! I just went through this with My girl Poppy, She was known formerly as Miss Piggy but after the second round of impacted crop within a few weeks of treating the first one I renamed her to something with different energy. Lol!
With Poppy I gave her a lot of yogurt and other probiotics. Ground tomato, coconut oil, also, I massaged her crop several times a day and kept her separate from her flock. The real turning point for her was making my own crop bra for her out of denim. She only had to wear it for a few days and nights and she couldn't be with her flock until it was off because if you ever put a harness on a cat that has never had one that's how she acted. She was constantly trying to get out of it. But we worked it out and worked together and she's back with her flock. Her crop is still slightly pendulous but she's very careful to not let it get impacted and I monitor her carefully.
You really shouldn't have to spend a lot of money on your bird, most everything I learned about emergency care I learned here. BYC is full of amazing people with fantastic advice that, when followed carefully, can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars and the life of your bird.

Hope your girl is doing better!

Her crop still isnt empying very well! Its back to the stage where its hard and full but when I massage it, it softens up. I really want to try the antibiotics and other stuff like dewormer but my parents are advising me not to put extra stress on her digestive system and to give it more time. But its been 3 weeks and im getting sick of this.. shes losing weight. Her spirits and appetite are still high but she doesnt gorge or eat too much.

Im still massaging every day. I tried a crop bra but it did not work very well and stressed her out. (I can try again though). Today i gave her a drink of water with ACV in it to help digestion.

My parents accidentally bought a different kind of feed. Its still layer feed, but it has no corn and has ash instead. I read ash is good for digestion, but im hoping the food change wont be too rough on her.

I have to buy ivermectin or some other dewormer if im gonna deworm her. Apparently safeguard doenst get rid of hairworms, and if anything im suspecting that. I want to eliminate as many steps as I can because i fear that i can very easily make her digestion even worse!

Tomato juice, solid coconut oil, an egg and a tablespoon or two of yogurt. Mix it up and give her a quarter to half a cup every day, massage her SEVERAL TIMES A DAY, EVERY DAY!!! It will break up and go away unless she has an obstruction somewhere else but the liquid diet is your best bet. Trust me, my Poppy went through the same thing. Keep her separate, a cat carrier in the barn or garage if you have to. But she needs to be separate from her flock so she only has the liquid diet going in. She will poop solid for a few days and it will get better. SLOWLY reintroduce solid food to her. When her crop starts emptying by itself PROPERLY, then go ahead and put her back with her flock. But not before!
Good luck! Sending prayers and good energy!!

Thank you for the advice! Unfortunately I am at school for much of the day, every week day. I would isolate her if I could but she is unfortunately very wild and if I leave her in a room she will fly somewhere she isnt supposed to. I don't think isolation is an option.

What I can do is isolate her away from solid food for a couple hours over the weekend. I'll try the egg, yogurt, and coconut oil, I have those on hand. What exactly is the tomato juice for?

Thank you for your prayers and good wishes :)

The tomato juice helps things get moving I understand. It literally made Poppy poop. A LOT! If the garage sales are still out in your area try and get a dog crate for her, a second hand rabbit hutch would be ideal. She won't be happy, but the more you can isolate her from solid food the better! Massage her in the morning before you go to school, massage her when you get back, massage her when you put her to bed at night. I didn't have tomato juice so I juiced a tomato for Poppy. See if your Mom or whomever is at home during the day can give her a massage at lunchtime. Otherwise if you can dedicate at least three massages a day for her do that.
Good luck!!

Ok! Do you recommend just plain tomato juice?

I'm trying to think of a way I could possibly pull this off. I dont have a crate nor do I think I will be able to get one, but I have my laundrey room. The only thing is that there are many shelves she could try to fly up on and end up injuring herself. So I think a large crate would be best.... I'll look into it...

Over the weekend I will be able to have her off solid food for 2 and 1/3 days straight. I think thats the longest I can do, unfortunately. My mom is the only adult in the house and she wouldn't touch my chickens with a ten foot pole lol.
