We have a Broody hen situation due to a family emergency that distracted us from the timing.
The hen and eggs stayed in the milk crate nest box in the vertical position, so the opening is at the top.
They started hatching last night (Mon, 4/11) and we rushed to prepare the area for brooding, but we couldn't fix the crate issue while they were hatching. We've waited today for Broody hen to decide to take a break for water so we could rush in and shift things, but she hasn't so much as stood up all day. We hear the cheeping and can see the broken eggshells around her. There is no way for the chicks to get out of the vertical milk crate to get to water and food. There were 8 eggs. Broody is a first-time mom.
Should we lift her by force and swap the nest box as quickly as we can? How would you handle the situation? Thanks for any help!

Yes, lift her and swap the box. You could tip it on its side. I had a milk crate w a broody too. I swapped it out before they hatched with another crate with the side cut out.

But the chicks won’t leave until Mom does. And she won’t leave the unhatched eggs, at least not right away. You could put a small amount of food close by. This is moistened crumbles. BC15D7DB-F9AD-425C-9DCF-FD482B17E4FC.jpeg
She was waiting for the last egg to hatch, there were only 2. She waited about 48 hours, and then gave up on the other, which we noted had died.

Thanks Sue! Following your advice, we lifted her and swapped the chicks and eggs over into a larger box.
I was rather shocked while counting the little Sussex chicks, there were 8, and another 8 eggs under her! She must have stolen additional eggs, So I'm not sure how many of those left will hatch, but two of them had pipped! I carefully placed them pip up in the box, hoping she didn't roll them too much while getting settled.
I then had to run out to tractor supply and I noticed they had Lavender Orpington chicks. How was I supposed to resist that?!
So we stuffed them in with their new adoptive mom, she was being very sweet with them.
Updated Total: 14 chicks, 8 eggs 😲
We also took your advice with the moistened food, she encouraged them all to eat and scarfed half of it herself. So I then brought her a bigger helping and she wouldn't wait for me to fill the dish but kept eating off the spoon, I could almost hear her saying "It's about time! I ordered room service ages ago!"
