Not sure where else to put this question, but my husband took away the ducks pool in the chicken run and dug a big old hole,..started adding piping to drain it,..so in other words a little pond going in.
I had a startling thought,..is that ok to have a little pond for the ducks in the same pen as the chicks and goats??? I mean there never was a problem with the little pool, but they would hav to climb up to get in,..this is level with the ground.
Thanks

I have a pond..one of the goats fell in - once. Goats don't like to get wet. It never happened again. Chicks I would be more worried about.

If the chickens are younger, then a pond can be very bad news. I've seen several posts of people finding their chicks drowned in ponds and water sources for ducks.

If your chickens are full grown, I'm really not sure. My guess is that they would be ok, but then again I couldn't tell you for sure. Definately an interesting question.

As for the goats, they should be just fine

Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with the ducks swimming water in with the chicks. I had two drown in the 1 ft deep swimming pool. I felt terrible! They were just starting to fly a bit and I am assuming that they flew in. I moved the ducks pool outside the fence and they get to swim in the evenings when we take them for their walk.

One of my young spitzhauben pullets fell in our duck pool once. It's a kiddie pool just sitting on top the ground. I heard the female duck quacking at the top of her lungs and ran outside...she was attacking (or helping?) the drowned spitz in the pool.

I fished the chicken out and held her upside down, totally limp, and dirty water just poured out of her. Luckily after a morning under the heat lamp she perked back up and was completely fine, aside from some small cuts and missing feathers due to the duck's "help" when she was drowning.

I would all so watch your goats with the pond.. If the goats drink out of it there might be a chance that they can get Giardia from it...

I have been watching the chickens and goats,..so far the goats seems very picky about water..even the water they drink has to be nice new fresh, I also went on youtube and found a coupla goats swimming videos, and amazingly chickens swimming too. None from choice so much I think.
One chickens made it's way into the pond and flew back out,...and I see they do a wide circle around it so that's encouraging. I noticed most of the lot, chicks and ducks want to spend all their time over in the coral now,..ugh,..we built that for the goats and the goats seem to want to spend all their time in the chicken run..go figure
