hi guys! i am up late doing my last assignment. i am home schooled, and if i get the last of my work done soon i can go back to my home village and STAY there!

i have to do a 16 line poem about modern times. that's pretty much all they gave me for guidelines. modern culture, modern cars, sports anything.

any ideas? i've got writer's block!

How about one written from the persective of a village elder mourning the old ways as he sees how modern times have affected his people?

It is always easier to write about what you know rather than what you don't know.

what a great idea! my head just exploded with words. makes me think of my grandmother, she is 102 years old and barely speaks english, and does nothing but talk about growing up. she often says "oh, where all my friends go? them died i guess, just me, only me. them died i guess." and then nods off to sleep. her words in themselves sound like poetry.

I FOUND HER ON YOUTUBE! i can't wait to see her this summer. she is a wonderful woman to listen too. in the video she is talking about when she used to walk to Lime village. worth a look, i think

trouble is that where i'm from modern times haven't affected us much except that we have boats, guns & four-wheelers to make life easier, but i think i might be able to make it work

alternatively, you could write about how people who enjoy old fashioned pursuits like raising chickens and enjoying nature use the internet to share their thoughts and wisdom with each other.

When I saw you are from Dillingham it reminded me of something my DH told me. He had been in Wainwright talking to one of the elders. This elder was very grieved that the younger generations had been so affected by the outside and no longer knew how to live a subsistance life style. They spent their time in persuit of pleasure.

Your grandmother must be quite a character!!

THAT IS SO TRUE! i see that EVERYWHERE here and it pains me to see kids saying "I'M FULL BLOOD NATIVE!"

well kid, act like it.

my 100% caucasian boyfriend is better at acting like a real native than they are. that is why i want to go to my home village. sure, the kids there like their soda and dirt bikes, but they all still speak their language! they all like to just go in the woods with NOTHING and stay out there for a few days and come back with nothing more than messy hair. they still bring their parents and grandparents fish.

i really wish places like this were more like my home. i wonder why they are like that there and not here? i wonder what it is that makes them more respectful there and not here?

in any case, that is a great idea. and yes, my grandmother is a character. she had 15 kids, my father being the youngest. i feel like i can relate to him because my dad fathered over 16 kids and i am the youngest AND his only daughter. MAN when my parents were together, my dad went to some crazy lengths to protect the chickens. i can't wait to see him!

ETA: she talks about the grand canyon every day. she was really impressed by it!

I just read your post about Shenanigan. Your last post was so moving, so well written, I do not doubt that your poem will be outstanding. Sorry about your bird, and best of luck with your poem.
