I just gave my chickens some apple. All were eating just fine. I decided to pick up one and check her vent b/c she's had some runny poo lately and a turned her upside down to do so. Her vent was okay, but when I put her down, she began to sneeze, cough and now is making a gurgling sound!!! I'm so scared. Please help!

She seems to be doing okay now. That was so scary! Tomorrow I'm going to take a fecal sample to the vet to be checked b/c she's been having some really runny poo...almost all watery with some yellowish color. If anyone's interested, I'll post an update tomorrow after the vet checks the fecal sample.

Just keep an eye on her. She may have drank water or something and when you picked her up, presssed on her crop. Since they are so tiny, it doesnt take much to accidently push stuff up back out of their crop into the ir mouth and accidently into their lungs. Good luck

Thanks Silikiechicken. I hope she's okay. I'm about to cry! I just haven't had good luck with my babies. They've had worms and poo issues since Nov. right after I got them. Maybe I'm just an idiot and keep doing something wrong and should not have chickens. I hate it because I feel helpless to help them. I do take them to the vet occasionally, but I don't think she knows too much about chickens herself.

If you have turned her up side down what was in her crop has come back up into her throat or lungs...she is just trying to get it back down... Keep an eye on her....

Oreo seems to doing just fine. Guess I must have pushed on her crop when I picked her up. Anyway, I dropped off poo samples for 3 of my 4 chickens at the vet this morning. I haven't heard anything yet though. I think they must have some sort of parasite because they're poo is just not a "normal" consistancy anymore. I'll post more when I hear from the vet!

Feeding too many treats or to much different food besides their layer feed can be causes of poo not being normal too.......

I know you are correct about the treats. I did give them an apple yesterday. In the past I've given them popcorn, lettuce, black oil sunflower seeds and dandilion leaves. Do you think those sorts of things could cause runny poo? Would you suggest that I cut out treats all together? Do you give your chicken treats? If so, how often and what kinds?

Actually, it wasn't iceburg, it was arugala.

Anyway, the vet called me with the results of the fecal test....no parasites in any of it!

She suggested that I worm them again anyway. If there's no parasites, why worm them I wonder?

I don't think I'm going to. Does anyone know if the Avain Charge 2000 should be added to the water daily or not?
