Hey hey,

So today I got 2/4 eggs from my hens which I wouldn't have thought anything of except I lost a hen recently. I think at least one of my girls is sick. Behavior has been mostly normal but while I was scooting around cleaning up outside I noticed her bottom was dirty so I took her in to rinse her off and found broken feathers and rough skin. Obviously something is very wrong. What do I need to be looking for?

It's either my failing senior brain or there is a ton of missing and incomplete information here.

Let's talk about only the hen you are concerned about.

How old is she?

Did she molt yet?

When was the last time she laid an egg? Have any been thin shell or shell-less?

What is her behavior? Normal or "off"?

Have you checked her crop?

What does her poop look like?

Does she have a "shelf" of fat just below her vent?

How many in your flock and how large is their run?

How old is she? 1 year this month

Did she molt yet? No

When was the last time she laid an egg? Have any been thin shell or shell-less? Yesterday, the egg was normal

What is her behavior? Normal or "off"? Normal, editing to add: Normal but indicating stress when the rooster charges up to her or tap dances. Rooster is approx 8 months old

Have you checked her crop? Haven't checked yet

What does her poop look like? Whitish puddle

Does she have a "shelf" of fat just below her vent? Just the bald spot

How many in your flock and how large is their run? 5 total, 4 hens and 1 rooster and they have free range in the backyard, so about 2000 sq ft. The other 3 have normal fluffy butts.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't post all this already

Her crop doesn't feel big or squishy or anything.

One detail: The roo has been, let's say, interested in her and so I've noticed a few stress behaviors (ducking head, cowering) but figured it's because he wouldn't leave her alone. Could it be related to that?

Sooooo

The henny I was worried about *did* lay. Only it was 12 hours later than usual (almost quite literally, she normally lays 6:40-7:40 every PST AM). I'm still too new to this to know what, if anything, this means.

Keeping an eye on poops. And maybe...molting???? Someone (maybe 2 someones, I'm gonna make my wife help me examine henny booties) still has diarrhea but now I'm not 100% sure it's her. I mean, it probably is. A delayed lay is still something to watch right??

Full disclosure, the hen that's worrying me is just about 1 year old. So she could be close to molting, which I've read also causes a pause in egg production. I'm just. I had another henny (Daine) whose egg production went dry but was otherwise normal and then 3 months later, she was dead. So I. I want to do whatever I can to prevent that happening again.

The egg: It's mostly normal, only it came out on my deck and not in the nesting box. Or in the morning, like usual. The shell feels normal, but has more "stuff" on it (ie, it's more textured than normal with calcium deposits and whatnot). Maybe it didn't come out earlier bc of all the poo crusting her booty that I washed off?

Tentative hypothesis: Maybe she's molting?? Or maybe she has a stressed immune system and it's making her more prone to things like vent gleet. Or idk man, this is my first flock. All I know is I want Link and Zelda to make it past their 1st bday.

I'll keep an eye on them and try to track whose stool is whose. Tomorrow is another day. And we'll see what comes of it, eh?
