Need Help from ORPINGTON owners

Aw, thanks. He is just a baby and has lots more growing to do. He should push 10 lbs at least by a year and I'm excited to see how his development goes. I also wanted to point out that at the age your pullet is now, you would see red going down the back of a cockerels legs (as in my cockerel pic). That is a typical sign of a maturing cockerel and is used for display to attract the ladies. The girls legs stay white.

Here is a pic of that cockerel's daddy.

And a nice pic of a pair showing good golden buff plumage..

I definitely recommend a rooster for your girl. Our buff orp roosters are so sweet and gentle. You can't go wrong with their personalities.

Thanks Jody... Oh they are beautiful!!!!!!!! I have 5 buff orp hens... and believe me, I love them more than the others... the BR's come in second place (even though they are my first layers).... It's been so funny the past couple of days... ms rooroo (I really have to change her name) follows me everywhere... if I walk outside and she is across the yard... she makes a mad dash to me and then follows me around like a little puppy... it is so cute!!! My other buff hens are very friendly too.. but when she is next to me... they keep their distance or she pecks at them.

I keep asking her when she is going to give me an egg... and she just cocks her head and looks at me... she is just adorable. They turned 18 weeks (the lil ones 14 weeks) today so I think I might go get them a watermelon since we ran out.

Hello, all!

I hope it's not presumptuous on my part as a total newbie, but I'd like to piggyback on the Orpington thread here with pictures of our Marigold, who at 14 weeks looks & acts NOTHING like our Poppy (with her tiny bumply pea comb and her sweet snuggly ways). I've been convinced we ended up with a rooster, but after the verdict on Tes' girl, I had a little ray of hope. (I'd LOVE a buff Orp rooster, but our city ordinances don't allow them.)

I sure hope the photo thing from flickr.com works. I've never done this before.

We got two buff Orps and some kind of Easter Egger in May and finally finished the (somewhat) portable coop.

I'm just delighted to find this bulletin board. This Sunday, I'm even preaching about the joys of chicken keeping at church (see the thread in Me, My Family, My Chickens, etc. if you'd like to share your feelings about the moral and spiritual side of bringing beautiful and productive animals into your life!)

I'll look forward to anyone who has a moment and can weigh in on Marigold's gender. Thanks so much for your time!!

Peace,
Kerri
(3 chickens - Poppy and Marigold (buff Orps) and Bea (something Easter Eggy)

p.s. Tes - we thought of flowers that are golden or yellowish. My sweetheart and I had just been on hikes where we saw California poppies and marsh marigolds, so the girl(s?) got their names that way...

Maybe Buttercup or Tansy or Lily or Primrose or Honeysuckle...?

Kerri - you got yourself a boy there. You can tell by the curls starting in the tail.

Accidental - thanks

Thank you, Jody!

Oh, dear.

:|

I thought so, but was still hoping...

He's very pretty. Maybe he'll forget to crow.

:|

Will the girls miss him terribly when he goes to his new home, you think?

Kerri, Oh I so wish I lived closer to you... I would definatley take him off your hands!!! Coming to Virginina anytime soon???
LOL... Anyways, thanks for the name help... and something popped in my head when you mentioned those types of flowers... I was thinking of poppie... but that sounds more like a rooster... hmmm what do you all think? after all I was born and raised in Cali... and my grandfather grew poppies here in virginia when he was alive.

hmmm
or how about "Rose bud" I love roses and have several bushes on the farm by the house, and she loves to lay right next to them... needless to say I dont have many roses...
hmm.png
they've been eating all of them... I'm going to have to fix that for next year... I love my roses too.

What do you all think???
