Sadly the baby girl just passed away. She took a real turn for the worse last night. We were with her as she went, just trying to comfort her as best we could. This aspergillosis is a real nightmare. Our comfort is that we fought so hard for her. At least we won't have regret that we should have done something differently...
Thanks to all of you who offered advice and encouragement. We're really glad we joined BYC...
So very sorry..... so so sorry!! Nothing anyone can say will help other than to try to learn what happened - removing the moldy wood, making sure there is no damp areas or damp grass or wet food from yesterday hiding in grass they eat and keeping everything as clean daily as you can is a must while they are young and confined...
If it's heat, we keep fans on low not blowing directly on the geese/goslings when they are small but far enough away to make a breeze at night as geese are covered in feathers and down and are HOT! They normally sit by a pond or water source at night to cool off and splash in water in the day to stay cool. The heat is a problem for sure. Fresh water changed 3-4 times a day and making sure you have a bowl deep enough for them to dunk their entire heads eyes and all under water when they drink - this allows them to clean their nasal passages as they blow bubbles.... not doing this will cause bacteria to grow and thus disease....... deep water bucket or we use a plastic storage tub clear so we can tell when water is dirty and change it 3-4 times a day with fresh water while the heat is on.
The key is not to lose the other one now. Also, make sure like someone said you're NOT feeding them corn or corn chops as they produce heat as well during the day. Get Flockraiser crumbles or pellets or Mazuri (ask feed stores who carries it or can order if necessary feeding flockraiser until then) as it is specifically for Waterfowl - starter for the youngsters and maintenance when they get older 3-4 months) .
Make sure they ahve access to fresh grass. Any grass - it has to be 2-3 inches long so mow it on HIGH and set them in it.... they get all the vitamins they need mostly from the earth and the greens --- grains help too but when they're old enough to eat them only.
AGain, so sorry for your loss!!! Wish someone could have helped with the right information in time to prevent it.
