I have a 2 1/2 year old Speckled Sussex that is going on day 2 of not pooping. I do notice that she will occasionally pass a small amount of white stuff that looks like urates.
A little back history....This all started Sunday evening when I had let them all out to free range and I noticed her on the dogs sleeping pad laying down almost like she wanted to lay an egg. Earlier that day, she had been in the nesting box, but never laid an egg, which is not totally out of the ordinary, so I assumed that maybe she needed to lay a late in the day egg, or was straining a bit. Just in case it was an egg issue, I gave her a calcium tablet and set her in the nest box, but she had no desire to stay in there. She seemed off though.
I was hoping to find an egg the next morning, but there was nothing. I checked her crop first thing yesterday morning and it felt hard, or impacted and there was no poop under her roosting spot, however, her mood seemed fine and she seemed active and alert. This is when I finally saw her poop, but there was no actual poop, just urates. Because of the hard crop and no pooping, I decided to give her a stimulant free ducolax along with some watermelon and crop massages and did this again late in the afternoon. I also gave her a warm epsom soak and another calcium just in case of an egg, even though she wasn't showing any classic egg bound symptoms. I tried inserting my finger into her vent, but I couldn't seem to feel anything. I also kept her in the separate run yesterday with no access to food, only water.
After all of this, I was hoping to see some poop under the roost this morning, but there was nothing other than a small amount of the white urates. Her crop this morning is more squishy and not hard like it was yesterday morning. She is drinking water, but didn't go to eat first thing in the morning, which is totally unlike her. She's walking around, but I can tell she isn't her sassy self. I'm at a total loss as to what to do to help her. The not pooping terrifies me and makes me scared for her and I do not want to lose this hen. I feel like there must be something obstructing on her insides, since this all happened so suddenly. Do I try to get her to eat something even though she's not passing anything? Is there anything I else I should be doing for her? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!!
