Mine are banded because they are guaranteed to be homozygous, and registered with a studbook. Without them, if you throw them in with chicks from Joe down the street, now which ones are they? and now they are adults in the yard, but they look kinda like those other birds too... The bands are small on an adult and meant to permanently identify the bird and where it is from.

Would YOU want something in your arm that shouldn't be there? The skin can grow around it, etc. etc. etc.
