Hi all, I'm new to BYC and to chickens in general. A couple weeks ago, I ventured out to Farm and Home in Portland MI and picked up 3 RIRs, 3 Barred rocks, a Pekin and a Khaki Campbell. Being new to chickens, I was not completely familiar with how the Barred Rock were supposed to look, and one of them appears to be a mystery bird. At least to me. After hours of research, I have been unable to find any idea of what this bird might be. It is a dark brown (almost black with a white stripe running down its chest. It also has Darker legs and dark feathers with white quills across its back. Photo quality is not the best, but hopefully someone recognizes this breed. Or maybe its a mutt... This bird appears to(in my not so knowledgeable opinion) have a double comb. Also, Gender would be good to know as well. Thanks for your help!

Yeah, I looked at some photos of australorp chicks and it is kind of close, but not enough to convince me with my limited experience. I will try to get more pics as this was taken almost 2 weeks ago, and he/she looks considerably different now. But I do agree that it is NOT a BR.

silver laced wyandotte, usually the hatchery ones arent laced as well.

Hmmm... good call. Thanks! I found a few pics thanks to Google images that are quite similar to what I have. Now my other question is can anyone identify the sex of this bird? Or is it too soon to tell?

Anybody care to venture a guess? It has small wattles, but come is still pretty dark and not really pink or red.
