Hello chicken friends! I have 4 lovely ladies that I got this March from our local feed store. They're usually really fantastic, but their "chicken guy" was not in that day, and I got the impression that the person who sold me the chicks was not really sure what she was talking about. I decided at the time that it didn't matter, but now I'm just super curious and I want to know! So. Below are pictures and descriptions, and I'd love your opinions on what these chickadoos actually are.
1) Ruth Bader Hensburg (the darkest brown hen.)
The feed store lady said she's a Black Australorp. I am not convinced. The brindle of her feathers is just stunningly beautiful. Maybe a Barnevelder?
2) Zippy is the fluffy yellow one. The feed store lady said she's a Rhode Island Red. I suspect not. I would guess Pekin if she weren't the biggest hen of the flock! Maybe a Buff Orpington?
3 & 4) Ladybird and Atila the Hen (Tilly) were almost identical as chicks. Tilly's feathers are a little deeper red/brown and she has a more slight frame, but otherwise they look a lot alike. They are both reddish brown with feathers turning black at the end of their tails. The feed store lady said they were Ameraucanas, but by now I basically don't believe anything she said. I could more easily believe they are Rhode Island Reds than Zippy. Or with the black at the end of their tails, Catalanas?
None of them have feathered legs. Also none of them have started laying just yet, which I know can be a helpful piece of information in figuring out chicken breed. They're all medium-friendly, maximum-entertaining.
So, wise knowers of chicken-related-things, any thoughts?
