I have a cornish cross who is about five weeks old. Because he was going to be a meat bird, i didn't handle him daily like i have been my other chickens, so as to not become attached. Today I was checking him over and noticed what looks like a terible pussy sore covering his rear end, with bits of bedding stuck into it. the vent is a raw red color. Is there any helping this bird untill he is ready to be eaten? If I do have to cull him, he wouldn't be good to eat right?

Sorry for no disclaimer for the picture. This happened rather quickly, Here is a picture from last week. Again, I usually would pick him about once a week to make sure he was all good, but not often enough to grow attached like i have my other chickens.

Okay, so I have been searching and searching, and i am pretty sure this is an extreme case of vent gleet. Treatment will start tomorrow with an epsom salt butt bath, some yogurt, and iodine, and some anti-fungal cream. I have also read that garlic in the water may help and will try that.

Alot of people have looked at this thead but no replies? Anyways, i think that a large part of the problem was that this chicken gets stressed way too easily and he was getting picked on by my other chicks. After a week of being isolated, daily cleaning and disinfecting he is doing much better. The scab fell off yesterday and while the area is still irritated, it is much smaller. Looks like he will be okay.

I'm glad you figured out a treatment plan! And it's kind of funny that you basically have just been talking to yourself here...

Yeah i know i have been talking to myself. But all the information i got was from old threads so i figure it can't hurt to throw out information for the next person.

Well, I think you may have helped me. I just inherited a chicken yesterday with a similar looking rear. According to her previous owner, she has looked like this since she was a chick.. and she does tend to be stressed because she was always picked on. You should see her sister... she's missing half her chest feathers. I've got them isolated from the attacker now, so hopefully that will go a long way to help. If anyone has other ideas, I'd love to hear them. It looks absolutely raw and sore... can't imagine how that must feel, poor baby.
