Our family is going to start raising chickens. We need all the help we can get! I just got the incubator yesterday. We need eveything, for when they hatch coop, feeders etc. The kids are very excited !! We are just trying to find some hatchling eggs. Any advice on the best kind of chickens to raise w/ kids would be appreciated!

from WI. Where in Tampa are you? I used to live in Palma Ceia until 2005. Not in the fancy part though....There are lots of Floridians on the forum. Someone from Tampa, one from Lutz, someone from St.Peter/Clearwater, Plant City. Check out the section "Where am I". If you want to check on breeds, there is a breed info list on BC, Feathersite has a list and my favorite site is Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart.
You may find someone near you that has ferilized eggs of the breeds you choose. Or you can order from a hatchery or private breeder. Search the site, I'm sure something will jump at you.
Also check out the coop construction site for ideas . Lots of people build their own coops or find stuff or building materials free or cheap on craigslist, freecycle, at consruction sites etc. Good luck and glad to have you

Hi from Seminole Heights. I like the RIR, the Red / Black Star sex link and also the EE. They are the best layers. Large eggs and anywhere from 200-300 a year depending on the breeds I mentioned. Shell's Feed store on Nebraska Ave, just North of Bush Blvd. sells chicks there. They usually sell the RIR or one of the other big layer breeds. And you can buy as little as 1 chick. They know a lot of breeders who sell eggs and can stear you to someone in the area I'm sure. They also have a great selection of supplies. They mainly deal with the Purina brands but also carry MannaPro and other brands too.
They are quite knowledgeable and very helpful and friendly. So feel free to ask them anything.
There are around 7 Feed Stores in Tampa. Just google to fine them.
Hope this helps a little.
Have a great rest of the weekend.
Fellow Tampanite.
