Hi you all,

Please help me and advise.
I don't know what to start from....

I lost two quails in one week. Found first one found dead without any visible damage.
later in the week did see one limping, and found it dead next day with big bulge in its leg bottom.

Today other two are limping, one with bulge, one without. see picture below.

The other leg on the picture the one with black crust, I assume that happened because she can’t lean on the leg with bulge.

All quails are on ½ inch wire floor.
Both dead and injured are females..
Please help.

How long have they been on the wire for? Looks to me like their feet aren't liking the wires too much. I had some similar experience with the metal wire mesh. I didn't want to take out the entire floor so I went to home depot and brought the plastic 1/2 inch mesh and laid it on top of the metal wire. I also put a few areas where the birds can get off the wire and rest their feet. The poop has a harder time falling through the wires but if you line them up correctly it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Good luck!

Looks like bumblefoot and worn down hocks. You need to get them off wire immediately. Add some sort of bedding, whether it be pine shavings, grass hay, straw or even corn cob bedding. If you don't have anything at hand until tomorrow, you can even put in a piece of ply wood with towels laid down, till you can get to the store.

You might also rub on some neosporin, (without the pain killer) on the injuries to help against infection. You would have to apply it daily for a week or so. Once they heal you can get them back on wire, however ALWAYS provide places to get off the wire. :)

Oh, and welcome to BYC and the quail forums!

You may want to look into building a cage with no bottom like one of ours so the quail can not only have healthy feet but a more happy life eating greens and searching for bugs. The quail seem to love it greatly. Best of luck.
