She starting acting lethargic yesterday evening and has been all day today. She is just standing still in 1 spot like she is trying to sleep. I spent awhile trying to search on here for similiar problems but could not find an answer.

She is 12 days old today, was hatched with 6 others that are all fine, or seem to be. I am a newbie still so I am not sure what to look for to figure out what is wrong with her. The only thing I did so far, was look to see if she has a pasty butt, she does not. I was able to get her to take a few drinks of water a few minutes ago but that is it. She just wants to stand in 1 place with her eyes shut. All the other chicks run up to me when I go to feed them. I did hold her on my hand with her back against my palm and she just laid there and fell asleep until I turned her back over.

Please let me know what all kind of information you may need to help me figure out what is wrong with her.

Thanks in advance.

Are you feeding the chicks medicated or non medicated feed? Do her droppings seem normal? At this age, I would suspect Coccidiosis or an internal genetic problem (probably Coccidiosis, though).

The best treatment for Coccidiosis is the coccidiostat Corid (amprolium), which is given in the water. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the Corid dosage (haven't used it in a long time). Hopefully, other BYC members come along who know the dosage.

Corid is not an antibiotic, and it won't hurt the chick even if she doesn't have Coccidiosis (other than depleting her thiamine levels slightly due to the way it works). You can usually find Corid at a local livestock supply store for a relatively inexpensive price. If you want your chick to have the best chance of living, I would definitely try to find some Corid and begin treating her.

In the meantime, keep the chick warm and comfortable. Make sure she isn't being harassed by the other chicks, as that will deplete her strength. I'd keep getting her to drink water ever so often; if possible, I would also get some poultry vitamins/electrolytes and put them in the water for extra energy support. Food is important, too. Tempt her with special foods like moistened chick feed, scrambled or raw egg, mealworms, bread, etc.

Good luck!

I had a chick last year that was behaving this way. It was suggested that I treat her with corid. I used the liquid and she recovered beautifully! I will try to post some before and after pics. Just remember to make fresh daily, make sure this is the ONLY source of drinking water and treat all the babies if they are in with the sick chick. It won't hurt them.

3/4 tsp powder per 1 gallon water OR 1 tsp liquid per 1 gallon water

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Did not go well, had a very busy day and an interview in another town,,, long story short, I was not able to do anything, and by the time we got home, DH decided to put her to rest and burried her after decapitating her. All he said was that she was laid out below the heat light with her wings spread out and laying on the ground barely breathing,,,, he picked her up and she was gasping for breath so he dug a hole and culled her, :(
