I noticed my 9mth old chicken limping. A Wyndotte,I isolated her and checked out for an injury. She appeared healthy, still eating and drinking . After 3 days she now cannot walk without falling. Her poo is normal, with white cap. I have wormed the girls 3 weeks ago, Have been putting sulphur- quin in the drinking water as I was tiled she had coccidiosos, She had no runny poo.
her eyes are brights and no discharges from nose. feathers a little ruffled
I have also been putting some water soluble vitamins in the girls water

May be related...2 weeks ago I had another bird die after a week , she had eye discharge, paralysis leg under her had one leg stretched out-front. This chook was the same age as the one above. Was told that she died of Mareks.

My other hens are well and still laying eggs.... am I going to loose my girls. I have isolated the sick one as soon as I saw her limp.
Is there anything I can do to save my beautiful girl

If it is this Mareks, could you tell me how it arrived to my chooks, My neighbors do not have chickens... would have they been infected when I purchased them? I am not looking for compensation or anything like that, I just would like to know. The last time I have chickens in this area was about 5 years ago and they died of old age any and how long will it take before I can have new girls.

Regarding your hen. I don't know. If you had a confirmed case of Mareks a few weeks ago that exhibited the same symptoms I am afraid that she may have the same. As you probably know the leg outstretched like that is classic. However, lameness can be caused by many things. Vitamin deficiency being one of them. To try to help her you could give her a b complex tablet smashed up in her food. One per day as thiamin deficiency causes neurological problems. Botulism is possible depending on the conditions. So are lots of other things unfortunately.

There are many other threads on here on Mareks. If you go to the upper right hand corner there is a search box. Type in whatever you are looking for.

I have a sick chicken right now too. I don't know what is wrong with her and Mareks is a possibility although I think probably not. It is usally considered incurable but a couple of people have recommended homeopathy and cranberry tablets. I would check those out.

Mareks is everywhere. It is a virus that lives in the ground. Your girl is a little old to catch it from what I understand. Do you have a vet nearby?

I'm sorry I don't have a lot of help to offer but I know how frustrating this is. Use the search function first. The only definitive way to diagnose Mareks is a necropsy. I really hope it doesn't come to that. Maybe the worming or the cocci.

I have been giving them vitiams in their water. I have taken the last ones to the vets and they where not so helpful they automatically said that is was Mareks. Does anyone know a vet in Canberra ACT that is good with poultry?
I am finding this site a wealth of information.

Well 2 doses...... she still tries to walk and does, she is still eating and pooing and drinking. No wing drop and eyes clear and bright. She is a beautiful bird...... it is all up to the old bloke upstairs.....

Maybe the bloke upstairs will help her to survive here - he may have a full house up there at the moment!
