Calcium in layer feed is 4% versus 1% in chick feed. That is about the biggest difference, and calcium can cause kidney damage and gout if used in juvenile chickens before the age of laying. I really doubt that using it for a few days is the reason your chick died, but more likely shipping stress or an unknown internal issue.
