In the Brooder
Some quick background: My in-laws bought three chicks from Bomgaar's (farm and ranch supply chain for those that don't know) to add to our flock. They were labeled as lavender orpingtons, and the employee helping my FIL said they were lavender orpingtons, but I'm certain they must have been mislabeled because they are definitely not lavender orps.
My guess is that they're buff orpingtons based on the feathering. Despite that, we're happy with how things turned out because they're the sweetest and most sociable chicks we've raised so far.
Now, onto the actual reason for this post: The chicks have just reached 8 weeks, and my partner and I have begun to suspect that one of the three may actually be a cockerel due to the comb and wattles being more developed, as well as having a more noticeable red hue. We already have a RIR rooster, but due to him being aggressive toward us and causing feather damage to our hens, we've been contemplating rehoming him. (We never intended to have a rooster; my MIL agreed to take him in on our behalf without consulting us because he was destined for the stew pot.)
If our buff is a cockerel, we'd much rather take our chances with him and rehome the RIR. I'm hoping someone can help me determine the sex of this little dude so we can decide if we need to get serious about rehoming our current roo.
The chick in question:
And one of the other chicks for comparison:
Edit: Adding some side view photos I took earlier today.
The chick we're unsure of:
One that we're pretty certain is a pullet for comparison:
