need help sexing my peaflow

im sorry to say he passed away this morning.. i guess i didnt help him in time. but at least I have all the proper medication to prevent this from happening again.

Hi there, sorry to hear you lost him. Unfortunately many of the things that kill young Peas are found in your soil, Cocci, Black Head, and Worms can all be present in the soil. With Cocci it would probably be more unusual if it were not present than if it were. This tends to make using different pens for them useless, because there is generally soil under every pen and therefore exposure will occur no matter what pen they are in. A necropsy will give you a definitive answer as to what killed him, but even if he died of Cocci, you should still worm your birds because worms are everywhere as well. Sometimes it is best to just assume they are being exposed and treat preventatively no matter what. How old is your new hen?

i think i just moved them outside to quick. my new hen is either just started ladyng this year or 5 years old. i got both answers when i got her. i and giving her the preventive for cocci, and worming her. should i be using a antibiotic with the prenentive dosage at the same time? all my animals are getting medicated because i dont want any to die

this is not to sound rude, but why do you think i shouldnt get anymore. as long as i treat them before they get i wouldnt see why it would be a bad idea for me to get more.

I don't think you really need to do a preventative dose of the antibiotic, this can actually do more harm than good as it can promote antibiotic resistance in some diseases. I would however use the preventative dose of Corid in her water for 2 weeks, and I would worm her right away and then repeat in 10 days. Anytime you move a bird to a new location this is a good idea. I refer to Cocci as if it was just 1 thing, but there are actually many different varieties of Cocci that can infect your birds and sometimes they have a good resistance to the strains they are used to, but then when exposed to a new strain in a new location, they can become sick. I think the advice to get the necropsy prior to getting more Peas is just to try to prevent any more deaths. While we can advise you on the "Most Likely" causes of death in your Peas, without a necropsy none of us can be 100% sure what it was, and there is always a chance that it was one of the rarer bugs, in which case worming and Corid will not guarantee healthy birds.

If that question was directed to me, I would just think it's a good idea to find out what's killing your birds before you expose more birds to whatever it is. Right now you are operating on the excellent advice of other pea owners who are just guessing what might have killed your birds. If you find out what actually killed them you will know what you should be treating any new birds for and can treat them effectively.
This is just my opinion, of course.
