Thanks. I'll see how she is doing in the morning. If she looks well enough I'll post photos in the morning to seek advice on how to remove the wing. She is Nugget. She started as a leghorn cross for eggs but, took a liking to my mother whom spoils her with extra treats the others don't get. So yeah, she is a pet. We tried to get these pines removed this past summer but, the tree cutting service basically said they would be a big hassle to remove and it would cost a fortune. Another one fell which fortunately just flattened some brush I was going remove anyway in the spring. Have a good night. I'll update in the morning. Yeah I know what you mean by the tall, skinny pines. They look like umbrellas with hardly any limbs.
Have you considered asking the fire department to help remove the 2x4 without removing the wing? I mean, they like to practice their extrication skills. If they don't have too many other calls to respond to due to the weather I think it would be worth a try.
I'm sorry about the hen but glad to hear you're doing the right thing and waiting untill its safe to attempt to help her . I'll be saying a prayer for you all down there tonight .
See, this is where i KNOW that i'm a certified idiot..
i'd run out there and and either put her down quickly..(break her neck..) or free her wing and bring her inside... Because i cant take an animal suffering..
I know..its not safe and you shouldnt do that.. I'm just an idiot.
Good luck to you all...
I went back out there because most of the trees on this side of the property already fell (5). One nearly took out my D'uccle cage too by a couple of inches! My fence with my splash OEGB was bent badly by a limb falling on it but, the little bantams were safe inside their little dog house.
I went back out there and lifted up the roof and removed debris. Surprisingly her wing was pinned between a piece of the roof and the 2x4. Her wing is not even broken and she is just fine and was even warm because of the way the roof collapsed over her. I moved her and her smaller type sisters to my dad's EE cage next door. My ducks got moved to the d'uccle cage because they pretty much get along (D'uccles raised them). My RIR hens and BO hens were moved in with the Splash OEGB hens because the OEGB hens are top of the pecking order with even those larger hens.
My roosters will have to run free for a couple of days which is fine because I have a shanty little coop I was going to tear down because I wasn't using it anymore. The roos can stay in it and be uncaged during the day since their fence is destroyed.
I found a body while getting her out. Sadly my RIR roo called "Daddy Long Legs" (another pet) was crushed and appeared to die instantly. All in all it wasn't as bad as it could've been considering their coop was crushed nearly to the ground. Tough birds! I hate that I was preparing for amputation but, nothing is wrong now but, thanks everyone for your comments. I guess I'll go to the building section and get plans for a new coop which will be on the other side of the cage next time!
Wow, that is amazing that she is okay! So sorry about your roo. Hope he didn't suffer much. I should be asleep but keep checking on your story! Chickens are amazingly tough..
Yeah he was one of our favs. He was kind of tall and funny looking because he wasn't fully grown.
We liked him because he was the escape artist and always was out digging in the mulch and following
people and the cats around the yard.
