I have a coop (shed converted to chicken coop) ,the floor gets wet when it rains heavy or when there is a decent amount of snow. There are some thick wood panels(several inches thick)that are embedded into the dirt that serves as the floor. I really hate the floor but it would be impossible to remove these boards without seriously damaging the shed. They are huge and are extremely heavy and the ends are under the walls of the coop. They are a few holes where the boards didn't quite fit. Is there any way I could seal the floor after I fill in the holes with something? Or maybe I could put cement on top of the wood panels? Any suggestions on what I should do to waterproof the coop floors would be appreciated. I clean my coop with a hose 2-3 times a year so something that can withstand that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Without knowing where you are I would say build a floating floor on top of what ever you have. Couple of two by fours supporting plywood to get it off the ground and you are good.

Or do the cement.

Or build a frame to keep the sand in and fill the whole floor with sand. Sand is very forgiving you can rake up the poo and keep it level and it will let the water out where ever it needs to go.

Which ever is easiest for you

Hi deb, I'm from New York. I was just reading about sand earlier today, I think sand would be the easiest way. I painted the floor a few years ago to protect if from decaying and so far so good. I think I will paint it again when the weather warms up and cover the floor with sand. I can still use hay in the nesting boxes to keep my hens warm, and everyone should be happy. Thanks again.

Another option is to glue FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) to the floor. I did this, and glued plastic sheets (basically shower backsplashes) on the walls. I then caulked all the corners/seems. I am planning to put sand over this in the next week or two, as soon as I finish a few other details on the coop. Right now we're using pine shavings.
