I was at school the other day at an FFA meeting when my friend and I decided we wanted to do an Supervised Agricultural Experience project together. We debated different ideas and decided we both like animals. So we decided to start a poultry farm. Here's where you guys come in. I need help because neither of us know about running a business. Any help will be appreciated.

i just need various ideas as far as names, ways to operate, flock managing tips, etc. I forgot to mention what we were gonna do. We want to raise chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, turkeys, quail, and pheasant for meat and eggs. we also want to operate a small hatchery.

The first thing you want to do is build the appropriate facilities to house all the different breeds you want. Keep all receipts as you will need them for tax returns.

First, you need to research all breeds and make sure those are the breeds you want to continue with as some are a little different to raise.

Just ask us questions and we will try our best to answer them.

The first question I would have is do you have an area big enough to do this....and the financial means to do so? Building coops and runs for all your seperate breeds will not be cheap. Then there would be the expense of getting good breeding stock to use.

I was just given 8 acres and I have the materials to build facilities. I was planning on keeping a mixed chicken flock for eggs, a small broiler flock for meat, and small runs for my trios. As for the other birds, I was only planning on raising small amounts of each.

You will first need to devise a business plan on paper, detailing your entire operation, equipment & facilities you will need to run the operation and what facilities you will build/need to house your animals.

You will need to do the math and come up with some solid figures of what your start up costs will be and that may then recquire you to apply for a bank loan (unless you have the money).

The bank will want to see your plan and your estimated monthly/yearly income expectations.

They want to see on paper that you are comitted to your plan and that this is indeed a money making venture, whereby you of course will be able to pay them back the money you borrowed from them.

Don't forget you may have to hire a contractor and his subs to build etc...

Once you have a very good idea of where you want to go with this, I'm sure the good people on here will be able to help you pick out the best breeds to mess with & other advice.

Best of luck!
