Yesterday our 4 day old Ameracuana died.

She went from being fine, to dead in like 2 hours. In retrospect there are some things that happened that day that may have contributed. Please help me figure out what happened so I can make sure my other chicks are not affected by this illness (or my errors).

10:00---Yesterday morning noticed she was pasted up a bit, cleaned her up, all is well (I have been checking them all twice a day and cleaning bums as needed). Took them outside for the first time, they ate a bit of sand on the back porch and loved walking in the grass. Some of them (not sure if it was her or not) found a tiny worm which they finished off. (I made sure they all ate a bit of sand for grit for the worm!)
1:30 --Went to take them to the Kindergarten for show and tell. They were all fine afterwards, the kids held them under CLOSE supervision, and did not notice any problems.
3:00 --In the afternoon she was pasted up a bit again, cleaned her up, and put her back in the brooder. She was sleeping under the light while all the other babies ran around like crazy chicks.
4:00 ---Still under light, a bit lethargic. I give her pedialyte by syringe, and try to give some yogurt. Put her on heating pad. Call hubby to tell him to stop by and get some organic ACV on the way home.
4:30---- She is SUPER floppy, head is back, cannot hold it up. Still syringe feeding her pedialyte. Saying prayers. Scouring BYC for past postings on sick chickens. She looks like this (sorry for the bad photo-- syringe in hand)

4:45--- Seizures, dies. Foam pours out of mouth.

Spend the next hour comforting hysterical children.

Bury her in the backyard.

I am sick. What went wrong? Is this the typical "well, you always lose a few chicks" thing (which, by the way, I have always thought is crap---if you take care of animals, they do well--- but this experience has thrown me for a loop for sure!)

They are bantams, unvaccinated (cannot vaccinate due to size), but are on medicated feed. All other chicks look just great.

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Sorry about your chick.

Some chicks have internal problems from hatch that cause them to not develop or process nutrition properly.

Some chicks can't properly digest some carbohydrates and that can cause death.

She could have been internally pasted up, causing death.

Some chickens just die. Amazingly Not Crap. Our Buttercup pullet died at 8 1/2 months of age. She had been the picture of good health the days before death. Necropsy came back - in "plain jane" - no evidence for cause of death.

How are your other chicks doing?

if edited, probably for typos..

Sorry about your chick I hate it when they die its so sad. I just had a EE die two days ago she was fine had her for a year. She was limping in the morning before I went to work seemed fine when I got home and the next morning she was dead under roost. I wondering if she was egg bound. Everyone else is fine.

I hope your children are feeling better. I think sometimes the "just one of those things" saying is used because without a hospital, vet, diagnostic tools, there is just no way to know for sure why a chick is sick, how to help it (if possible), or why it just suddenly dies. Certainly there are medical reasons for why everything dies, but sometimes, sudden death happens with chicks (and other animals) and you will never know why.

I lost one of my 4 day olds rather like yours, it just suddeny stopped being a happy, healthy baby, and within about a 12 hour period, it was dead. It was awful. But luckily, my other 19 are fine. This might just be an isolated event for you. We'll keep our fingers crossed!!!

This just happened to one of my 5 day old Araucana chicks, almost exactly the same thing! Pasted butt, but not pasted when it died, the thrashing, foaming and drooling when it died... I wonder if it's the Pedialyte? I'm going to take the waterer out now and put in regular water, just in case. Did you ever figure out anything about what happened to yours?

I have never used Pedialyte and will never use it, read the link below for cautions. I use raw unfiltered ACV.

http://www.cagenbird.com/vinegar.htm

http://www.pedialyte.com/faqresources/faq.cfm

Why Vinegar? Because it can be used medicinally, gets rid of poisons in the body, has disinfecting and cleaning properties and is a natural, nontoxic, biodegradable substance. That is, vinegar is an unadulterated food, a powerful cleansing agent and healing elixir---a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs and bacteria. We would be smart to make use of vinegar in our own lives and in our avian nurseries and breeding facilities. --- For a healthier, stronger, longer life for our animals and ourselves.

Raw unfiltered ACV is natural. I wouldn't give my animals or myself anything with these ingrediants read below.
