Need help with breeding?

If I bought mix ducks that are pekin/Ancona can I breed the pekin out of them with pure breed Ancona duck?

Not really, You'd still end up with mixes, though less pekin, and more ancona. Though maybe, through very careful breeding and many generations, you could be close.

You'll always be battling the various traits that are carried through generations. Some may be tied to males, some to females. For example, in fruit flies, there is a genetic trait that is only carried through the females of the species. IF a mother passes along this genetic trait to her child, the child will die before fully developing unless mom passes along ANOTHER genetic trait. While I don't know of any identified traits in ducks that work this way, it's a great example of how gender plays a role in the genetic makeup of the off spring.

Since Ancona wasn't derived from Pekins, I don't know that you could ever really be sure that you have pure Anconas, though you may be able to breed many Pekin traits out of your birds after multiple generations.

No to what? There's nothing wrong with having mixes unless you're really into showing or breeding.

This boy wanted to trade me my campbells for them. But the more I thought about it and since my kids want to breed Ancona plus your advice I decided against it.

I don't have a problem with mix breeds. I love the variation you get when you cross but my daughter's want to breed Ancona ducks to sell so they can raise money for college.

No! It doesn't matter how many generations you breed the pekin/anconas to anconas, the resulting offspring will ALWAYS be crosses. It's actually very misleading as some people will do this and sell as anconas simply because the offspring will be marked like anconas. And many unsuspecting buyers won't know the difference. That is why you should only buy from a reputable breeder with known bloodlines if you want to get into anconas seriously. There are just too many crosses out there that can look like and be mistaken for anconas!

Thank you. That is very sweet. I bought some eggs off a lady in North Carolina that breeds them and sells eggs. Her website is 'nantahala ' , I pray that she is good, she seem very knowledgeable on her site.
