Hello everyone. I have a toeless (frostbite) hen that has recently gotten bumblefoot on both feet. I was dealing with one foot when I found the other. I made a thread (~here~) about the first one, but I've decided to make a new thread for this foot.

After scab removal

When removing the scab, it didn't all come off in one go like I see happening with other people. When the scab was removed I wasn't sure if it was supposed to look like this or if I didn't get all of it out. I didn't know if that fatty looking stuff that is circled should be removed or not. I made a thread about it but only 2 people replied and they didn't really confidently say whether it looked good or not. When removing the scab some puss came out with a snotty consistency. It did bleed a bit also. Once the whole scab was removed I lightly pushed around the wound to see if anything else would come out, which nothing did. I sprayed Vetericyn on it, put triple antibiotic on it, and wrapped it up. Make note of the weird fatty looking stuff, I will talk about that later.
1 day (after removal)
I'm sorry to say I didn't get a picture, but this day there was a thin white scab over most of the wound. The scab wasn't hard, it was soft.

This day I noticed a little bit of redness, but after the Epsom salt soak it went away. I figured it was normal redness, since I didn't think redness from lingering infection would just subside like that. The scab has hardened, become more whole, and has turned a darker color as compared to the day before. I again put Vetericyn and triple antibiotic, then wrapped.

I noticed the redness was still there, but again the redness seemed to subside after the soaking. I continued to keep a suspicious eye on it.

Today the redness was a little deeper and didn't subside like it did with the soaking. I removed the scab, but as you can see I wasn't able to get all of it off on some of the edges as it was pretty attached. As I was removing the scab more of that puss came out, which leads me to believed not all of the infection was removed the first time. I figured that fatty looking stuff that I mentioned before may be something that needed to be removed. I got a lot of that stuff out, it was rather loose though some of it being removed seemed to cause some bleeding, so I'm still not entirely sure if it was a part of the bumblefoot or healthy tissue. Once I got all of the scab and whatnot off as possible, I again squeezed around the wound. This time I squeezed harder, hard enough to cause her some pain. Nothing came out. I put triple antibiotic on the wound (I forgot to put the Vetericyn) and wrapped her wound up.

I have no idea if I'm removing enough infection. I don't want to just go digging around in her foot poking at stuff. I really need some help and advice as to what I'm doing right and wrong. I would compare it to my chicken's other foot I've been caring for, but it wasn't exactly a typical bumblefoot.

Thank you for any help!

I've not dealt with bumblefoot. I'm sure an expert will reply. I'd continue soaking it. I'd also swab with Betadine, I am partial to it since it kills gram negative/gram positive/yeast/fungus/viruses/protozoa. Also, I grew up in the South where parents put iodine on every boo-boo. My understanding is that it's a long process to heal. You're doing good, hang in there :hugs

PS - it looks good to me - clean & pink. I think that's serum in the last pic which is part of healing.

Thank you! dawg53 is actually one of the people who replied on my first post about this, they were very informative and what had me watch the redness and do the harder squeezing.

I don't have any Betadine, at least I don't think so... I should really get some lol

About the serum, I've never heard of serum before so I need some clarification; is the serum visible in the picture? I googled it and it said it's a liquid, are you talking about the liquid that I said was puss?

I had a hen who had a similar problem and I used the vetrycin, antibiotic ointment method. I did that for about a month and the scab looked a lot like yours. I didn't see much improvement, and was gonna post a thread, but I looked at her foot again, and the swelling had gone down and the scab area was healing. I think if you keep up on using the vetrycin method it will eventually loosen the scab area, and any excess plug that is left will be removable. Whenever I replace the wrap, I pick any scab that will come off, and leave anything that seems attached and wait for the vetrycin to loosen it. Keep us posted and continue to do what you are doing as long as the swelling starts to go down eventually and the scab doesn't build up puss or a plug again. Good luck,
