I was handling the chickens to see if any roosters were ready for processing. (Unfortunately, they are still feathers and bones.) The real problem was the stink on my hands. It was dinner time and I couldn't wash it off. I washed three times with different soaps, and even vinegar followed by baking soda. That helped the most but the stink is still there. Tonight was mostly finger food, so getting the smell off of my hands was pretty important. I resorted to holding my breath when my hands were near my nose...
So the question of my ramblings is what works well at getting rid of the chicken smell?

If your chickens are poopy, you have an issue: either the coop/run needs to be cleaned up, or your chickens may have vent gleet.
The run definitely needs to be cleaned. When I'm out there, I'm not aware of an odor. The droppings are normal bird droppings, but I'll watch different chickens to make sure. My brother has done everything for all of the birds, but recently, I'm starting to take over. So I'm pretty green.

I had to do a search for 'vent gleet'. Yuck. None of the birds look like the pictures that turned up. They all have clean looking feathers back there. However, from reading the causes, they are prime candidates. Remediation and improvements seems pretty straight forward.

But what is meant by 'mother' in the following:
"adding 2-4 Tablespoons/gallon of apple cider vinegar with the 'mother' (such as Bragg) to the water"
(copied from vent gleet remedy)

Thanks in advance.

I make this and my husband (rancher) and family loves it. Take a jar and fill with baking soda 2/3 full. Add dawn dish soap, and stir until you get a thick paste. A little scoop will clean dirty hands! Gardening hands. I also use it to clean my stainless steel sink.

A paste of table salt and lemon juice will get the stink off if its the kind of stink that has actually sunk into your skin.I used to clean cow skulls and to do that you got to soak them in water. The stink off them is fine enough to permeate gloves so I had to figure out something. :)

Thanks Mrs K and CAS for your hand cleaning remedy. Mrs K, I'm almost out of the commercial "down and dirty hand cleaner", so will mix up a batch of your remedy. I love home made products. Such a money saver. I make my own laundry detergent, and have made a "poison ivy" salve that are wonderful.
