Need help with gender and breed please!

All the birds look like cockerels.

It seems to fairly consistently average near 50%, just like flipping a coin. It would be nice if they found a way to hatch only hens...

Did you buy those from somewhere or did you actually find a way to hatch nearly all males? That is a tough break. Even 50% is a lot to deal with, which is why I'm so interested in breeding black sex links (using Barred Rocks) from now on.

I excel at hatching males. I consider myself lucky if I get 50% pullets.

However a group of broody silkies outdid me a couple of years ago. I gave them 7 eggs. They hatched all 7. Every one was a cockerel.

Even if you hatch sex-links you will still have to have a plan B for the cockerels. The last two summers that I hatched I also got about 60% cockerels.

If the information in this link is true of your breeding, then the fully barred bird may be a pullet, despite having a comb and waddle (since BR's seem to often get those early on).
