Personally I'd be inclined to let the young birds figure it out themselves but since yours are on the older side and it sounds like you have the space to do this, you possibly could keep them confined to an area that they feel safe in, and give it a few more weeks until they get closer to POL, where hormones will change how they act and interact with the older birds.

thanks for the encouragement. i agree on keep them separate, esp with this heat. it will be so interesting to see how things change when they start laying, hopefully for the better. i have one that should start sooner than the other 2 by about 3 weeks, based on breed description.
