Though we've had chickens throughout most of my life, this is my first experience with an incubator. Every other egg we ever hatched was by mamachicken.......... soooooooo. What I need to know is if the membrance is drying out does it turn white? The membrane right over the chick's beak is translucent, but out from that it is white and dry looking.

In my opinion, that is what it is supposed to look like. The shell is gone from around the pip and I believe that it is the air on that part of the membrane that makes it turn white. I don't know this for sure. I have hatched several times in the bator and mine always looks white around the pip hole.

Just give the chick time to zip the shell. It will pip and rest for a while. Then it will zip and rest for a while. I can take quite a while for the chick to zip the shell and come out.

Hope this helps,
Dorothy
