My 3 month old cockerel pooped out a tiny tapeworm today. I’m not sure what kind of wormer are used for chickens and how much to give him. Any help is appreciated.
Please note he is part silkie and is tiny, just over 1 pound.

Welcome to BYC.

Do you happen to have a picture of what you saw? Was it moving?

If it was indeed a tape, you can treat using Praziquantel. You can find Praziquantel in a wormer paste form, here.

The dose is 0.03ml per pound, orally, dose once, and repeat in 10-14 days.
It was moving, I don’t have a picture. I’ve been examining his poop since but haven’t seen anymore. I’m almost positive it is, I took a vet science class and we dissected a dog’s heart that had died from the worms and this looked just like those only much much smaller. Thank you for the wormer links. I’ll get some ASAP.

Are you sure it wasnt heartworms you saw in the dogs heart?
There's a big difference between heartworms and tapeworms.
Tapeworms are flat and segmented. Heartworms are roundworms.

OMG you’re right🤦‍♀️ It’s been a few years and I got the names mixed up. Then it is a roundworm, and I’m seeing different wormers for that.

I recommend Safeguard liquid goat wormer or Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer for treating roundworms in poultry. Either will eliminate all types of poultry roundworms.

Ran into a problem with the Safeguard... put it into the cart and it won’t ship to my state, CA. Prohibited. So I’ll have to try the other one.

I used ivermectin to treat my girls years ago. its a horse dewormer, I only used a piece about the size of half a pepper corn or a split pea and the next day they pooped out tons of dead worms. but if you do use ivermectin don't eat their eggs for atleast 10 days after deworming. im in cali too. i got it at tractor supply. i got the apple flavored one. you will only need to give it to them 1 time as it will also kill any eggs of roundwrom and a few others.

my chickens were under 1lbs. they was about 4 months old when i wormed them.

I used to use Ivermectin long ago and stopped using it. It was ineffective treating roundworms in my birds due to its overuse as a miteacide in poultry. As a matter of fact, poultry mites are showing resistance to Ivermectin as well. Ivermectin has a long withdrawal period.
Also, the benzimidazoles are effective and safer to use in poultry.
