Need Ideas.. Duck Houses

What a GREAT design! I had some Mennonite barn builders make me a modified dog house, only I had them make the door about 1/3 smaller, and hinged one side of the roof in two sections (hinged at the roof peak, and also at the ridge halfway down the roof side (it has a big of a gambrel-type roof, not just a straight slant. They were concerned the hinge portions wouldn't be as watertight, but I told them it really didn't matter b/c it was going to be under a roof anyway. I still think adding some tab shingles that covered the hinge line would keep it waterproof. When I need to clean it out and replace the bedding (or gather eggs, etc.) I can lift either the first hinged part or open it all the way up to the roof peak. Works great, but the whole thing is EXTREMELY heavy. I like the design posted by Eroc1 -- has more possibilities, especially being mobile. Mine is inside a 10x10 chain link dog kennel wrapped in chicken wire, and wrapped again on the "sleeping side" with 1/4" mesh and more CW -- a raccoon was able to reach through the 1 layer cw and chain link and grab one of the ducks that was sleeping outside the house.

Hence, the additional wrapping.

Here is my duck house - it's divided in two with a mesh sheet and one lot of 5 ducks have the pen facing the photo (where the ducks are standing on the ramp) and the other lot of 3 ducks have the pen off to the right hand side. They are in here when I am not at home and at night. When I'm home they are out in the yard. It's high enough to walk into (which is great for cleaning). The walls and ceiling are insulated to keep it cool in summer. The blue curved things you can see right at the back are nest bxes made out of a cut up plastic barrel. The blue things at the front are automatic waterers (normally used for dogs but great for ducks as well). The pond and waterers drain to a drip irrigation system that pumps the water onto the vegetable garden (via a filter). Their food is kept just inside the house to keep it dry - I use non-tip steel dog bowls as they don't get knocked over. The raised base that the whole thing is sitting on is made of treated pine railway ties and these are filled with a layer of gravel and then a layer of sand. It drains really well and is really easy to keep clean. The ducks are Swedish - a mix of black, splash and blue.

What a wonderful set up! *says to self: "Thou shalt not covet. Thou shalt not covet. Thou shalt not covet*

I have been doing fine with a "doghouse" in a pen for a while, but these houses are making me drool!

Okay to combat all yalls nice looking amazing coops I will post a picture of my little recycled house. I used a pallet for the top and broke apart some more pallets to make the little ramp/roof that goes off to the side, then I just wrapped some chicken wire double layered around the outside and used zipties to attach a couple of doors. I put hay down inside to cut back on the mud and mess. My 4 ducks get fed and locked in at night and let out after 8 in the morning once they have layed. The whole thing cost $15 for the paint and chicken wire, I am planing an expantion for summer by adding another pallet top and lean to to the other side.

Hey, yours is great too! But how patient are your ducks about waiting until 8? My ducks' house is maybe just a little bigger than yours, and they start quacking about 7:00 and I jump out of bed to let them out so they'll shut up -- I don't need the neighbors complaining. They don't want any part of it at night, but I know we have raccoons so I'm too scared to leave them out.

Here's the house. The whole front panel swings open for cleaning.

My guys get let out at around 7AM as well. On weekends however, it can be 8:30 or 9:00AM. But no matter what time it is, our Rouen drake, Victor, hurls himself against the door just to let us know he's READY to come out!

Starting to get light out now and I have until about 7:15 before the girls start chatting to let me know they are awake and ready to get out.

My current set up is a sire dog run with a roof set up on bricks with a dogloo for the duck hut. They go in on their own if I put their supper in or when it gets dark. I just close and latch the gate and they are safe.

It's not pretty, but it works.

I really, really want one of those duck houses!

(Honey... can you build me a new duck house?
