Need ideas for a Aviary for my Peafowl, bunch of questions,I picked up most of the Lumber today.

Ok I picked up two 48" X 100 ft rolls of 1/2X1" Welded Wire, And I picked up a 150 ft roll of 72" Chicken wire for the top with 1 Inch Holes. Hope this is goo, I know it wasn't cheap.

I may still go with the netting on top, to cushion then if they fly up, I am not worried about the snow, If I have to go out there to brush it off so be it, I am making the structure plenty strong. The 1/2 X 1 Welded wire that I got seems pretty small I don't see how a weasel can fit though it, I am guessing a Mouse can But I am not concerned with them.

I purchased a old green house frame 85' long and used half to house my peacocks. I cut some cedar trees down and saved the tops with the limbs and placed them in the ground for the birds to roost on. I covered the entire frame with old 2X4 wire which has worked out well. Some people have used old round corn cribs to house their birds. Looked at several while I was in Wisconsin.

That was a good choice. I have 6 ft tall 1"x2" Welded Wire for our cages and we have not had any problems so far yet with this fencing. So considering the holes of your wire are smaller, you should be fine.

You really should go with 2" knotted netting. I am sure we have the same amount of snow as you, and occasionally there are times when the snow really weighs down the netting. We did have to run wires through our netting this year for extra support. Without the netting on top, peafowl can kill themselves. It is sad but a breeder that I buy birds from had this happen to one of his breeder Javas not too long ago. It's always best to get these things now to save you from issues later on.

I think I am going to use Hardware cloth for the sides, I am pretty sure weasels can climb, That does make me wonder if they will climb to the top and then down. I do have a Bostich air stapler and I have 1.5 and 2" staples.
I am going to call the guy about the netting today for the top.

Trefoil, I am getting a bunch of different sites for wayside, I am not seeing any hardware cloth, Could you maybe post a link, Thanks.

I am so sorry. You do realize that the mind is the first to go, right? Its wayfair, which is probably why you were having problems. Hopefully my link works.

Sorry, I didn't see your post earlier. My hardware guy (who lost a flock of chickens) told me that a weasel could fit through a hole the size of a 50 cent piece. But that's in Michigan. I only have to brush the snow off where its covered by the tarp, where its just wire I just take a stick and bounce it up & down and the snow ( what little there is) falls through. One of my runs has a peak board and the side boards running every 4' with the chicken wire over the top and 1/2 of it has a tarp over the chicken wire. Maybe because of the boards up there my peas don't fly into the chicken wire ( or at least I've never seen them do it), but they would just bounce off if they did, unless they hit a rafter. If the holes were too large I would worry about them getting their head through and hanging themselves. Where did you find 100' rolls of 1 x 2" wire? I've looked all over for it, I wouldn't use it close to the ground unless you don't have coons because they will reach in and dismember a bird through the wire, pulling it out in pieces, its a nasty sight. Coons can climb, but so far I haven't had a problem with it and its been three years, I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Trefoil, Do you mean 1/2 X 1 Wire? I found it at my local agway. I have also found it online in a few spots, I think the wireman.com has it. I am going to use that for the sides, I am still unsure about the top, I may do netting or I may do the chicken wire, Both make be nervous about stuff getting in though the top. The snow I am not worried about I can just knock it off though out the storm.

I use chicken wire around and over my brooder coup and put 1/2 that is 24 inches high on the bottom over the chicken wire but no critters ever try to get that close with all these dogs around well all but the snakes and my dog catches them when they get around the brooder, she got a snake outside the brooder just last week.
