need ideas on how to raise a dog not to kill my chickens.

I would call Animal Control on those pit bulls ASAP. If the owner doesn't even live there and only comes to feed them, the dogs are killing other animals in the area, etc, why haven't you done anything about them yet??? If I were you I would shoot every one of them, especially after they killed your beloved dog. They are a menace, pure and simple.

Well....in Puerto Rico there is no Animal Control. People here have to take matters in our own hands...like poisoning. Or catching the dogs myself and driving them to a animal shelter and paying 40 bucks each...not a easy task when they are agressive. I stopped walking the dogs when I was attacked by one of them. The owner was right there and stopped the dog....just to tell me it was a dog thing... That dogs fighted and that was normal..He almost laughted when he saw me with my 50 pound doberman in my arms carrying her trying to take her out of harms way . i was so angry. Stopped taking them out I can call the cops because they are illegal here...but i don't think they will do anything. (Once I found someone leaving a truck load full of trash in the street....I took photos where you can see the licence plate at the moment they where doing it, found out name, address . A easy case if you think. I did all the police work. I went to court to declare against the guy....well ...nothing happened. No charges. ) So my faith in the law is no good.He is a bad owner. My father is prepared to shoot at sight. i don't know how to use guns....I am afraid of them. My father will shoot, and just in case I made my coop stronger this time.....really difficult for them....and fixed better the fences. They have not returned. But the damage had been done already. My dog is not here anymore. I am against the pitbull ban...but to see how much damage they can do if working in a pack and with no control of and owner.....

You are a much nicer person than I am. If those dogs had killed my chickens, my dog, and attacked me, those would be some dead dogs and the owner of those dogs would not have a smile on his face.

I know many people in Puerto Rico do not want it to become a state because they would have to pay more taxes. But you can see that without those taxes you get fewer services.

It also sounds like there may be some corruption there. The people who dumped the trash probably paid people off or something.

I have seen on the TV news here in Texas where the police set up hidden cameras to catch people illegally dumping trash.

Oh, I didn't realize you live in Puerto Rico...that is a shame that you can't rely on police to help you out. I hope your dad gets the chance to get rid of those dogs soon!

Right now we pay 7% in taxes to the goverment. The problem here is the gov and the people. Many people here see the dogs like things so they dump the in the streets. The goverment don't enforce the anti cruelty laws...but believe me....we have them. I work at a school and once a stray dog arrived....we called the mayor's office to tell it was a danger for the kids and they did nothing. A father had to take away the dog. So we (or I) have a stray dog issue because they just find my house and I usually pay at the shelter for them. I'm no saint. It's just a bad experience. Last year one of those strays killed my mothers chihuahua in their own back yard. He was feral, I found a way to get him in a kennel....he destroyed it in a few minutes and ran away, tried to drug him with valium an xanax...the dog was like nothing happened so in desperation Me and my father tried to poison him. I putted in cages all my outdoor dogs and my father fed him from afar the poison mixed with sausages.....he ate everything. When I returned from home I checked the yard, saw the dog ok and happy and saw no poison or food so I let out one of my dogs because she really needed to go to the bathroom. Well, she found some of the vomit he left behind and nothing that I did save her. The vet used huge amounts of the anti poison to no avail. So, she died by my own hand and I still fell guilty. She was a stray that arrived at my house. Lived with me for 3 years. So, maybe karma. Now I try to prevent. Can't always do that. But still hoping my father gets them. So you see, i'm no saint. Just had luck in the past. Ahhhhh....we finally caught that feral dog...my father had to shoot him. He didnt had to kill for food or anything...I feed all the strays until I can take them to the shelter. He was bad...that was all.

Hey girl..I didn'' t read all the thread but ýou may try to get some advice in a shelter as where /who to turn to. Try with the Municipio , Oficina de Control Ambiental and/or Police write down who you talk to, what they say, etc. if any of it work, call the press...they will do something ASAP, any group of strays dogs can become dangerous to some degree once they form a pack as they became wild and do what it takes to survive... is not the strays or the pit-bull breed the problem, the problem are those irresponsible people that mistreat those animals, torture them, abandon them and made them mad.Blessings

I believe like you....I called the municipio and they told me they had no funds and can't do anything. When they had funds I had to pay for the service and catch the dog for them. They sended the dogs to the same shelter I take them but I paid much less taking them myself . Last time we called for a dog in a public school...They did nothing.
The pitbull pack has a owner. He just does not care. And maybe he feels secure that he will not be a easy victim of robbery again...I dont know. but you gave me an idea....I'll write to the newspaper. No talking about pitbuls. The problem is not the breed. I used to protest against the pitbull ban here. I know if I talk to the media about pitbull I'll get the atention easly...but thats no good for the good pitbull owners.

I hope you get rid of the danger of your neighbor's dogs asap... about Koodo Im sure he will be usd to be around chickens with out feeling the urge of chase them ( I actually few years ago i teach my dog to chase the neigthbor's chickens -that loves to poo in our balcony and scratch my plants- from our property, he was an adult stray around 4years old I rescued, the sweetest, kindest dog ever... he did not pay attention to the neighbor's chickens in our property until he saw me chasing them... i bet he though it was fun lol I felt guilty whren I found a dead roo in the backyard... my cat Guaili was a tiny rescue kiiten about 3 months old when i bring him home... it was funny how easily they became best friends, the kitty almost fit complete in his mouth and the poor thing was always wet with Kanji's saliva ... Guaili bites him, and walk over him, even give him "massages"with his front paws... when he was big enough they team up to chase mices in the backyard... When Kanji disappear 4 years later Guaili was sad & depressed for days...till now, 3 years later if you call Kanji's name aloud he will rise his ears and run to look in the windows hoping to see his friend back

How sad...but is true. The animals develop bonds with other pets and they miss them when they are not there anymore. My Sato had a pet. I never called her mine but I gave her food, vet care, she even sleep inside the house when he did. But when I talked about mydog I never reclaimed her like mine , she was my dog's pet.....lol...is like chicken math. For the people that judges me she is not mine. In that way I was not questioned for having more dogs... When Sato was attack I knew something was very bad because she was acting strange....I found him still alive because of her. He died arriving to the vets office. She was by my side when I buried him . And for a few WEEKS she was not herself. She was scared of everything...even me.She is better now... she is not the same but is learning .And I can see how happy she is to have the baby to play with. The baby is bringing her back. Thank god she does not attacks chickens...I hope koodo learns from her. Me and her working as a team to raise Koodo.. I thing he has something of chow chow....

dito... my Kanji had some chowchow too, the soft gorgeous black fur he developed after a few weeks of TLC & a purple spot that cover half his tongue ... She will get better just as human they heal with love, being a big sister now will do the trick (Guaili healed with my husband coming home, they adore each other!)& Koodo will be a chicken friendly dog you'll see :O)

It's a work in process. I freerange the chickens when I am home because I can hear the distress calls and run to help them. The chickens are in a area that the dogs have no access...until today. Koodo learned how to get there . He loves to go to the chicken coop and get the "treats" when I got out the house he was playing with the chickens. Like bowling with them. So he is in time out now in a cage.
