I have an idea for a chicken pasture. I have dogs, horses, and my chickens. I need a plant/shrub or something that will keep the chickens in and the dogs and horses out. I live in Florida. I will be using hog wire. Thanks!

Only very north FL. Most of FL is Zones 9-11. Sure, I'm 8a, but I can stand on my hill and nearly spit across AL's border. 8b is very narrow too, due to the way the Gulf and the Atlantic tend to buffer temperatures.

Large bodies of water do that, don't they? I'm in Zone 5b, less than 50 miles due east of Lake Michigan. Areas closer to the lake are Zone 6a.

Its almost like they are huge heat sinks or something... 50 miles as the crow flies for me is beach side, maybe the Gulf itself, takes us from my 8a to 9b, ALMOST 10A

It grew in the mountains in Catalonia much to my surprise; 35C plus summers and -6 winters. It also looks lovely when it flowers. The biggest plus is it can be woven to create a very dense hedge.

We have some things here that could work, but they are so invasive I'd never recommend anyone plant them deliberately, and some of it - for all that its impassable to me, it only slows the chickens. Looks a bit like I imagine privet does, but I don't know that i actually wehat it is. Small leaves, thin branches with lots of offshoots, thorns, Roots sprout new plants when exposed.

Of course, my birds nest in the native blackberry. ALSO thorns.
