Need Inexpensive chicken coop New to Chickens PLEASE HELP!

That coop is great! It sorta looks like the one my hubby built. I'm just trying to figure out the fun portion? I want to make a nice run, but I want it enclosed of course and I want a small door where the chickens can go in at night and I can lock them up. Too many hungry predators around here since they are building like the dickens.

It looks to me that there really is no inexpensive coop design. No matter which way I cut it I am going to spend around $1k to get started. I need to pick less expensive hobbies. Luckily my wife understands me. I decided in building a coop into my gagage. I will post pics in a few weeks to show everybody how I did it.

I am building a coop from an old tree house, I got the plywood I am using from a house that was about to be torn down I saw the bulldozer and asked if I would salvage some wood from the house, they said I had 15 minutes so I ripped the plywood off the windows and stacked it up by the time I got back with the truck the house was gone and the workers had piled up a couple more sheets for me. All I had to buy was the wire and fasteners.

I am never that lucky to find materials for free. Whenever I need something it always comes up after the fact that someone is giving it away. Always my darn luck. But I do love my chickens, that is why we are here right?

You should give some thought to Carolina Chicken Man's coop. It would be hard to build a nicer coop at a better price. $450, and it looks much better than some prefab cheapo. It would be very very easy to build.

I was thinking of building Carolina Chicken Mans coop, but here in norhtern Ohio we get a lot of snow and the weight of the snow would crush the roof. I added up the lumber that I would need and it would cost the same as building a barn/shed. I have decided to put the coop in my garage which will work out great. My garage is not hardly used and won't be a problem.

Checkwith your local freecycle and craigslist. Also go to the lumber yards in your area And ask for their scrap and bowed lumber. You can get a real deal that way.

Check to see if you have a "Re Store" warehouse (benefits Habatit for Humanity) in your area. They have donated used and new construction materials. We bought windows ($1.), a door ($2.) and rubber flooring (5 cents each for 18" square tile) for our coop. You never what you might find there! Anything from paint to nails, windows to pavers, electicial wiring to kitchen cabinets!

CHeck craigslist for used storage sheds. I've gotten two for 100.00 each in great shape. They make great coops.

A child's playhouse or prebuilt shed works well. If you're looking for a good book with a lot of coop designs and plans try "Chicken Coops 45 building plans for housing your flock" by Judy Pangman. You can get it on ebay, half.com or try your local library. Good luck!
