Need input! Teen with Thyroid issues, update

I would insist on a visit to that pediatric endocrinologist, but that's just me. I hope things work out for her soon

Almost sounds like the symptoms of diabetes. Does she tend to go to the bathroom often? Does she get agitated easily?

I'm a type one diabetic and when my blood sugar goes wacky, I have some of the very same symptoms as your daughter. Definitely see an endocrinologist. If she is indeed a diabetic and is having high BGs, she could eventually end up in DKA or even worse, in a diabetic coma.

I HAD to be at work this morning, since we're having an audit this week. Her father took her for the 2nd screen. I have pushed for the specialist. Hopefully he will follow through. As a diabetic he should know better. She's too young to make mistakes in her medical care now.

He also should know better than to have sodas at his house. The kids are there almost 50% of the time. Turns out she had Pepsi with mac & cheese for breakfast, and coke with french fries for lunch the day of the first urine screen. I could scream!! We can't control what she does at school, but he could do better at feeding them at home. They NEVER eat veggies at his house, and live on diet sodas rather than milk or water.

And now I'm a bad guy for saying they should maybe be with me until we get this health stuff straightened out. His take is that as a diabetic with thyroid troubles he understands more of what she's going through. My take is that even without that 'understanding' I'm setting a better example of correct eating habits and am more consistent.

And now he's there at the doc's without her and I wish I'd blown off work. I'm not tackling the pile of papers on my desk. I'm stressing.

I had thyroid Cancer 10 years ago. I had half of my thyroid removed then went for a second opinion and then had the other half removed. ( The thyroid is sort of butterfly shaped) There was cancer on the 2nd side too that the first surgeon missed. I had several radioactive iodine treatments to "burn" out any left over thyroid tissue.

I have been on thyroid medicine for 10 years. Make sure you don't take generic thyroid medicine until the doctor gets your daughter stabilized. Many people cannot absorb the generics as well as the name brands. Once she is stabilized, then you can try a generic for two weeks and have another blood test to make sure she is absorbing it. Levoxyl, and Synthroid are the name brands that most people have the best luck with. You also must make sure that you take your thyroid medicine at the same time of the day and on an empty stomach. This is critical because many vitamins in food or just in vitamins/suppliments react with the thyroid medicine and make it ineffective. So, when she takes her medicine, make sure she has had nothing to eat for 4 hours prior to, and nothing to eat for 1 hour after taking her pill.

Once she gets her thyroid under control. She will be amazed how much better she feels!!!! (Assuming that is what the problem is)

Go to a good Endocrynologist. Good ones can be hard to find. There are several TSH blood tests T3, T4, free TSH...I would make sure they are all done. (a good source of info is www.thyroid-info.com) A good book is by Mary Shomon. She has written many books on many thyroid disorders.

The sugar test is okay, this time. It was her eating habits that showed out on the last one. Doc did his best to scare some sense into her teenage brain. Maybe scared her dad, too.

Going to make major changes in her diet. Doc thinks that maybe her thyroid will stablize if she starts to eat healthy ALL the time. Have dinner for breakfast, protein in every meal, and no more daily soda at dad's. She's got her body totally out of whack. In the meantime, he's assured us that the synthroid itself can't do any damage and may even help her thyroid become stable. Gonna do more reading up on that...

GP also said that getting her diet on track and giving it time to take effect is another reason not to rush to see a specialist yet. Her father agrees, so I'm out-voted on this one.
