Need LGD.

I have a female black lab that patrols my 5 acres. She is great with the horse, goats and chickens and the barncats love her too.She turns into a pitbull if stray dogs approach the fenceline and she chases off coons.Only barks when something is going on and she is a sweet dog with a great sense of humor.

If your looking for an LGD breeder, you're going to make sure they do OFAs or PennHIPs on the parents. That way, there is a lot less risk of the pup having hip dislepsia or hip problems as an adult.

I have 10 acres in pasture now, and another 25 to develop. I want a LGD too. I have some house terriers and a few barn terriers. How do they handle other dogs.
Are females better than males?

Most of the true LGD breeds have very few hip problems since they are working dogs, and few are bred for show.

The ones with genetic problems were culled long ago, since many of these breeds go back over 2000 years

Actually, Great Pyrenees have been bred for show, pet and by puppy mills for many, many years so hips are a pretty big concern with that breed. A rarer breed like a Maremma or Anatolian Shepherd is less likely to have problems....but give 'em time. the more popular they become, the faster they as a breed will be ruined by irresponsible breeders

I breed Sarplaninacs. They are a rare breed from the former Yugoslavia. I have female that loves poultry. My old flock of chickens used to lay eggs in her dog house. I also had a chicken that hatched chicks once in her dog house. Even now with my new flock of chicks she still adores them.

Too bad the OP isn't in TX, there's a whole litter of 3 month old Maremmas in a shelter in the Dallas area.

Awww that's a shame, I hope someone gets them.....

I love my GP's, I raised the puppy's from birth with all types of poultry and fowl. My adults are very very good with all the birds, but not all GP's are good with birds....... but they certainly have the good nature to be. They are barkers, but spend most of the day unless needed lounging around then are up all night. they spend time marking the fence line and rubbing their scent on everything. Mine get along with our GSD and the puppies, but if it is not in our yard because of me, they do not like it. Mine hate my neighbors dogs...... but that is their job.

They are great with kids and people, but if I don't let you in they will act accordingly.. (unless it is a child). Overall they are a good mix if you are wanting pet, guardian, protector, goof ball. : )
