I currently live in MO and I know racial attitudes vary here by region. There's a giant difference between the Ozarks and the bootheel. My family is considering a move to Oklahoma -specifically Muskogee. We are an unusual looking bunch. I can't count the number of times we've been asked "What are you?" My daughter, who'll be visiting not moving, is a fair skinned green eyed blond. One of my sons is fair with dark hair and dark blue Asian shaped eyes. I'm dark with curly hair and non Caucasian features. When I moved to St. Louis County, the neighborhood ladies held a coffee and debated my nationality. They decided I must be Hawaiian. I'm not. The other son who might be coming has been repeatedly asked if he's Asian. He's in a serious relationship with a girl who is African American. So, what do you think? Would we fit in Muskogee? Might we be better off nearer Tulsa or Oklahoma City? I'll be shopping for a few acres in the country with the kids in apartments in town. I'd love to hear from some folks with first hand knowledge of the area.

Awesome. I've visited Tulsa a few times and really like it. I need a place a little more rural because of the critters. It's good to hear the kids would be ok in Tulsa.

There's actually some quite rural areas just outside of Tulsa. I'm not familiar with them, only visited Vinita a time or two and the Sand Springs area, but they are there!

Hopefully others will chime in, but if not, I wanted you to know that this opinion is coming from a white, middle age male. My daughters are in public school and don't come home with any reports of any race type issues at school. My oldest daughters closest friends include a Nigerian, a Muslim, someone from Thailand. Race, color of skin, hair , eyes does not seem to be an issue at least within their group. Generally Tulsans are a very friendly group.

Being a military town where lots of army folks come to settle after they retire, Lawton is multi-ethnic to a degree I haven't seen in other areas of the state, including OKC or Tulsa. Nobody would bat an eye or care one way or the other.

We celebrate our diversity. Our most popular annual festival, more popular even than the fair, is the International Festival.
