Chickens of all genders will 'spar.' It's dominance related, not gender related. What you describe about the attempted crowing, sounds more like yawning. Chickens do yawn. Trust me, by 6 weeks old, you will not mistake a crow for anything else. My cockerel crowed for the first time at 5 weeks. There was no way it was anything other than a crow.
