Need Poultry CSI for this mystery.. UPDATE PG 5

Quote:
They might not be able to get a real egg that far, but this was a wooden egg. Still could be a rat, but I wouldn't rule out the chickens themselves.

I don't know what you could bait a rat trap with, that the chickens wouldn't try to eat, though. I hate for a hen to be injured by a trap.

A hen can most certainly move an egg without breaking it. They can hold them under their wings. They can hold them tucked under their body using their legs. They don't have to roll them to move them although that is the most common way. A hen can carry an egg in more ways than one. Watch them for enough years and you'll be amazed at how clever those feathered creatures are.

REALLY?? come on.. THINK about this for a minute....
did you SEE that skinny little ramp?? with the cross peices?? you really think a hen could....
get the egg out of the box (up and over the front of the box)
across the floor of the coop (easy part)
over to the ramp.. (on purpouse??? or accidently)
UP that skinny little ramp, balancing it just perfect the whole way, and up and over every single cross member, without letting it fall off the side...
through the door ways...
and down the other ramp to the outside..
and finally out into the yard....

SORRY.. NO chicken on this planet could or would do THAT... all that WORK... for nothing????.. NO chicken has a brain big enough to fit all that info in their tiny little brains... hahahahahah
(without training)
i have seen chicks be carried by the mothers wings.. but never an egg...

sorry i still think it is a rodent.. squirrel or RAT.. big fat ugly rat..

i still think it was a chupacabra

You keep believing that.

I have been raising chickens over 20 years and they most certainly can move eggs in several ways over many obstacles. They can even hold the eggs between the legs and move them.

OH>> OH... are we gonna throw THAT around???(years w/chickens) are we gonna "go there"

.....
OK....

OK.. now i guess i gotta show my age.. eh???
i have been around chickens for 32 years and been breeding my own.. for about 23 years...
HA!! my numbers are bigger....hahahahhaha:gig

i still have not seen a hen MOVE someone elses eggs THAT FAR.. specially bettween there legs... there OWN egg, under a wing,, maybe.. sorry i wont belive it unless i have a VIDEO of that...
i will believe in the cupacabra.. first.. at least i have seen blurry staticky video of a chupacabra..
hahahahahahah;)
just because i am new to this board.. and new to a few breeds... doesnt mean i am new to chikuns!!!!

this is just a friendly jab.. dont get MAD....

Let's not argue.

But Even with Miss Prissy's wisdom and probable rightness, I have squirrels here that try to make off with duck eggs.

They get really mad and cuss me when I shoo them away.

The rub is figuring out where to put the trap, I don't want the hens to go near it.
Haven't seen any evidence of rats in the coop at all, the feed bin is undisturbed, and aside from the occasional mouse (who are about half the size of the chicken eggs!) I really don't really believe it could be a rat.
I would think I'd be missing eggs, or seeing eaten eggs if the thing was getting into the coop.
I have seen a chicken carry a chick under her wing, and I believe that the occasional egg on the coop floor is due to either a hen getting it caught under her wing or it being simply 'kicked' out.
MissPrissy , what you say makes sense. (As always!

) Especially since the wood eggs are slighly larger than the regular eggs and lighter. Maybe one of the girls got it up under a wing and walked it out?
The ramp is like five inches wide, and the door is wide enough so it could be possible.
I have to say, I'd rather believe that than a rat!

Tomorrow, err... I guess it really is later today (what am I doing up at this hour?!?) I will be cleaning out the shavings and doing a thorough search for any holes.
I'll keep you all posted!
