Hi,

Interesting situation, something for the past few nights has been breaking into my dog food container and stealing dry dog food.

I thought it was a raccoon, so I decided to set up my trail camera. I set it up last night. This morning, I reviewed the trail camera footage and found something interesting.

It was a stray dog. A VERY skinny, VERY hungry stray dog. No collar, so I assume he has no owner. On the other hand, he looks neutered, so I don’t know if he has an owner or not.

I need advice. On the one hand, I can’t have him keep eating Busters food. Buster is my dog, by the way.

On the other hand, I can’t let him starve to death. He is so skinny you can see his ribs.

What should I do? I really need advice.

I just rescued a stray dog not even 30 minutes ago. The poor dummy was a super sweet pittie but he looks like he escaped a bad situation.

I would set out some water for him and a food bowl of his own. Hopefully he'll decide to stay for a while and you can catch him. I'm sure he's probably skittish though.
If you have a large enough trap you could try setting some food in there and see if he goes in.

Or if you can figure out around what time he's been coming the most you could see if he'll come up to you. Just get a leash and put the end through the handle so you can easily slip it over his head. Use some food to lure him in.

You could also post on community Facebook and lost and found pages to see if anyone recognized him. Be careful of people just wanting to take the dog and pretending its theirs. If he had a collar you could blur it out in a picture of him and havethem tell you what it looks like, or have them tell you a specific characteristic about him that would confirm he's theirs.

If you do end up catching him you could take him directly to the vet so they can check for a microchip, and they could help him out. Or you could call a shelter or take him to one and they would do the same.

Good luck catching him.

Do you have no kill shelters or rescue groups where you live? He is so skinny, he should see a vet who can check for parasites. He doesn't have a collar, but might be microchipped. There is a possibility that someone is still looking for him even if he has been missing for a while.
I live in Dietrich, Idaho. Very small town. There is a vet in Shoshone nearby.

How do you get him checked for a microchip?

I believe there's something you can buy to check for that but the easiest and best way is by either taking him to a vet or a shelter that can do that.
